Mary,
Thanks for responding. I kinda fell into this surname looking for my
mother-in-law's real mother. She was adopted by her aunt and no one in
the
family seems to have a clue to what happened to her. Unfortunately we
didn't
ask the right question while she was still alive. And my mother-in-law
talked
about being afraid of her when she was little and thought she was going
to
steal her away from her new home. So all this is very exciting and
mysterious.

>Dear Diana,
I don't have the story on the
Elkhart Co., Carricks, that is to say,
I haven't as yet found anyone who
connects with them. I do know this, a
Thomas and Dennis Carrick, along with
two of our Wilsons, were said to have
been among the earliest settlers of
Jefferson Twp., Elkhart Co., IN. I
also know that Our Wilsons arrived in
Elkhart around the spring of 1831.
Along with that, James Louis Wilson's
daughter , Levina, married Emanuel
Carrick, Dec. 1843, in Elkhart, IN.
She and her husband ended up in
Muskegon,MI. I'm still working on this
line.

Subject: Our connection to the Carrick/karrick surnames and like Surnames
Hi, I'm just beginning our search but this is what we've turned up so
far.
We have an Ida Frances Magary (my husband's grandmother) born in Elkhart
Indiana, born on April 18, 1877, Her father, George C. Magary and Mother
Mary
Jane Carrick were married in St. Joseph County, Indiana. on April 14,
1852.
Mr. Magary was with Co. A 8th Wis. Inf. Vol. in 1864-1864 during the
Civil
War. And sometime after that they moved to Coos Bay Oregon. I have found
an
obit for Mary Jane indicating they had 14 children with 12 surviving at
the
time of her death 1911. The obit lists the boys names but the girls are
Mrs.
so and so. But here they are:
John Magary, Charles Magary, Mrs. Walter Robertson, Mrs. Davis
Jackson(this
is Ida Frances), Mrs. Jensen, Mrs. A.H. McKay, Mrs. Little, Mrs. Low,
Mrs.
Flora Longmire, Geo. Magary, Edward Magary
I hope I wasn't to confusing but so far I've come to a dead end on both
the
Magary and Carrick name. I found a date of birth on a web site in Oregon
for
cemetery records for Mary Jane Carrick s Jan. 8, 1834, but not where??
George Magary only indicated he was born in PA..
Does anyone have information on the Carricks from Indiana?
Please email me at Jcleven144(a)aol.com

My oldest known Carrick was Thomas Carrick born in France of Irish descent.
His family was originally from Northern Ireland due to religious
persecution, fled to France, known as "Wild Geese". He migrated to Ireland,
and became Catholic in order to marry(before 1836) Mary O'Donovan.(this is
according to what I've been able to find-I don't understand why he became
Catholic as I thought it was the Catholics that fled from Northern Ireland
to France i.e. "Wild Geese". Mary was born before 1800 in Co. Kerry.
Thomas was head gardner for the Knight of Kerry. Children were Patrick,
Thomas Jr, John, Agnes, and Johanna. John my grgr-grandfather remained in
Ireland with Thomas Jr and were stone masons. John (born in Cahirciveen
before 1836)married Mary O'Sullivan (who's brother David married Johanna)
The only child that I know about of theirs is David Joseph Carrick born in
Valentia(date unknown) came to the US (date unknown) married Julia O'Leary
born in Valentia. David died in Long Island 06/15/1943 and Julia
02/14/1954. David's children were John David, b.05/25/1901 d.07/10/69; Mary
Agnes(m.John Cole), b.7/21/03 d.9/18/73; David Francis, b.1/1/06 d.8/1908;
Josephine Frances(m.Eric Kerr), b.7/18/08 d.1973; Julia Jeanne(m.Christopher
Williams), b.8/28/10 d.3/22/84. My grandfather was John David married
Marion Sullivan. Their children Mary Catherine(m.? Linz) ,b.1924
d.12/19/61; Frances Julia b.8/27/25; Joan Helene b.2/16/31; and Eleanore
b.8/20/36 d.8/6/46. My mother was Frances Julia.
Anything sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone give me more info on the
"Wild Geese"?

visiting with her daughter, Sarah

time of her death, Sarah and her
husband Frank, were living in Michigan
City, IN. Her son Walter Carrick was
living in Fruitport,MI. Her
husband,Emanuel, sons, Emanuel and
James, along with her daughter Mrs.
Mack Mitchell, were living in Muskegon,

died, or what became of her children. I
also have no information as to the
identity of Emanuel's parents. The only
clue that I have as to the identity of
Emanuel's parents, is that the early
histories of Jefferson Twp., Elkhart
Co., IN, list a Thomas and Dennis
Carrick/Kerrick as among the first
settlers there, along with Levina's
father James L. Wilson and his brother
John T. Wilson. I also know that the
Wilsons removed from Ohio, to Indiana,
circa spring of 1831. I am hoping that
someone at your sight will recognize

me, if you recognize this family. Thank

My Carrick connection is actually Carrig. My grandfather's mother was
Bridget Carrig who married James Burke. I am uncertain of her birthplace but
my grandfather, Thomas Burke, was born in Cahecbroder (sp?) Galway, Ireland -
in 1878.
Thanks for the opportunity to share information.

A note from the CARRICK-L rootsweb list manager:
A few years ago I started a mailing list for the same surname group on
Listbot. Many of you joined that list. Later somebody started a list on
rootsweb but abandoned it, so I took it over. A few days ago, Microsoft Corp.
, which now owns Listbot, along with half of the web, decided to cancel that
free service. So, I am taking all the messages out of that archive and
resending them to this list so they will be in the rootsweb archive. I don't
know how else to get them there, and maybe some of this will be new to some of
you, so if it seems like too much information to digest all at once just save
it in another folder and come back to it when you have more time. There are
about 630 messages, but some are administrative and I won't send them.
I will do only a few a day. I am sorry that I will not have the time to edit
each one neatly, but I only have a month or so to do this.
Hope this helps.

Subject: CARRICK and like Surnames
Well, I have a Carrick line that has been a total MYSTERY.
My Grt.Grt. Grandmother was a MARY E. CARRICK, born 1849 Kentucky, her
father
was born Ireland according to the 1900 census Leland Prect. Josephine
Co.,
Oregon. Her mother born Maryland.
From and old picture there was some writing on the back that states her
name
as MARY ELIZABETH CARRICK born Clay Co., Kentucky, and raised in a
Louisville
Catholic Home. I believe it was a home for orphans?
MARY E. CARRICK married EDWIN MARTIN LIGHT about 1866-1867. Found EDWIN
MARTIN LIGHT and LIGHT family on the 1850 census Washington Township,
Ohio.
The note that we have concerning the CARRICK- LIGHT'S, tells us that
EDWIN
MARTIN LIGHT lived in Olivey, Illinois then to Fall River, Kansas, and
from
Fall River Kansas left by wagon train to come west to Oregon around
1881-1882. By this time MARY E. CARRICK and MARTIN EDWIN LIGHT had at
least
three children maybe four. One of which would be my Grt. Grandmother. The
story that has been passed down for generations is that while on the trip
west, that my Grt grandmother was one of a set of twins, and her twin
died on
the trail somewhere around Chimney Rock. On the 1900 census it shows that
there were 11 children born to MARY and EDWIN LIGHT and only 7 living.
MARY
was a very tiny women from her pictures. The 1900 census also shows that
they
also had two of their grandchildren living with them in Oregon.
CHILDREN born to MARY CARRICK and EDWIN MARTIN LIGHT
Lara Etta, born unknown
Minerva Minny born Kansas about 1866-1867
George Washington, born Kansas January 1875
Pearl Mae, born Kansas (Elk Grove?) May 5, 1878, (My Grt. Grandmother),
she
said she was about five when they arrived in Oregon?
Ruby Clementine, born Oregon July 1886
Ada, born Oregon April 1890
Will, born unknown
Any information on which road to take??? Or is there anyone out there
that
might have any clues???

Well Gil, here is some about my Carrick. My father was Arthur. His Father was
Archibald Carrick (Arche ). That's all I know about him. Although I do know
he came right from Scotland through Ellis Island. I think I found him there.
his wife (my grandmother) was Jessie McArthur. The reason my father was name
Arthur. I know some about her. Her father was Alex, son of Wm. & Margret
McArthur. Alex was born Dec. 31, 1847 in Parrish of Govin Glascow. Alex's
wife
was Jessie Blair, daughter of Alex & Jane Blair. Jessie was born Jan 15, 1846
in ?? Langlon in Parrish of Old Mounklan. These two are my great grandparents
on my grandmothers side.
Here comes some more on the same side. GGrand parent Wm. McArthur was born
April 24, 1823 in Pollock Shaws. His wife was Margaret Cameron born July 31,
1821. Now my ggrand parents on the Blair side?? Alex Blair was born May 3,
1801 in Aberdeen in Gowns Parrish Sent Nickles. His wife was Jane Lennox born
May 6, 1803 in the Parrish of Yorn Catran Ayrshire. That's the end of what I
know as far back. But I do know that my great grand parents, Jessie Blair &
Alex McArthur, were married Jan 22, 1868 at No. 164 Kelvenhaugh St. Glascow,
Scotland by Sr. Wm. Bennie, Minister of Kelvenhaugh church. Now that should
give someone something to look for. LOL. May be some of my McArthur, Blair,
Cameron or Lennox people are out there. Can any one help??? Lets see what
happens! Thanks, David Arthur Carrick

I would like to know if Hugh b. 1711 had a son or grandson named James
who married an Elizabeth. I have a James Carrick that lived in Fairfax
Co., VA. Knowing that the Faquier and Fairfax are so close in proximity
that it could be possible. My James had several children: Henry Sr.,
Joseph, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Nancy and Doshe and not necessarily in
that order. I have a census that shows James in Fairfax Co. in the 1782.
I am having trouble linking his family with any other in northern VA.
They had a farm near Alexandria, VA. My James and his family moved to NC
around 1802. According to a copy of something my uncle has. Is there
any help for me without having to go to Fairfax? Anything would be
appreciated. The full name I have on him is James C. Carrick and his
approx. b.d. would be 1760/70. He died 1812-1817 in Davidson Co., NC.
Hopeful,
