Diane,
In answer to your query about the Carr's and Thomas Jefferson: (Wonder how
many different stories you are going to get!!!) Here's what I have: "A bit
of early history of the CARR's of the south: The first of this name in VA
was Thomas CARR, who was born in England ca 1679. He married Mary DABNEY,
who was born Jan. 22, 1680 in VA and she died Sept. 7, 1746. Thomas Carr
had a grant of land from the King, consisting of 25,000 acres in the
Counties of Louisa and Albemarle in VA, Written on parchment granting to
"our trusted and well beloved Thomas CARR, Gentleman, a tract of Land in our
Colony of Virginia." Thomas died May 29, 1738. His issue:- 1. John,
b.1706; 2. William, b. 1707; Thomas, b. 1709; Sarah 1714. John CARR had 13
children, the 5th child was Dabney CARR, b. Oct 28, 1743. He was President
Thomas Jefferson's dearest friend. (See Lisitsky's Thomas Jefferson.) He
married Martha Jefferson, sister of Thomas Jefferson. Dabney...was buried
in his (Jefferson's) Monticello grave plot. The above is from "The Carr
Family Record" book." - (taken from The Silver Horse, a
genealogical-biographical and historical record of TREVILLIAN from England
to America. Compiled by Ray A. Trovillion.)
I found this book at the Salt Lake Library.

CARR-L,
Do any of you Carr folks know more about the Carr's involved in the
Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings controversy?? I'm not trying to
start a debate about it or anything, it's just that a fellow family
member who had worked on the family tree for nigh on 30 years told me
that there was a story in the family that our Carr's were connected to
Thomas Jefferson. This was news to me, she hadn't been able to prove or
disprove the idea, since she hadn't researched our family back that far.
Our farthest back is Archibald Carr b. c1805-1865, born in OH and
probably died near Farmington, IA.
I'm one of those skeptics who say, what family doesn't have some story
about being connected to somebody famous? It's fun to uncover the facts
whether they prove true or not. Like mystery solving or something.
Then I found out that there really were Carr's connected to this
Jefferson story and I would at least like to be knowledgeable on the
subject (I'm not). I don't think there is a connection for my Carr
people. But Jefferson was an interesting guy and if anybody searching
for Carr's knows more about the connection, I love to hear about for
history's sake! Maybe someday I can put the myth to rest, although I
had never heard it myself.....you can mail me directly unless you think
the list would also enjoy hearing about it. Thanks loads~
