Hi Sandy--
I'm sorry I'm so long getting back to you but I don't get up to the
Woodstock Library very often. I've now expanded my McHenry County CARR
seaches to cover your family (Franklin) also and here's a few tidbits I was
able to come up with.
In the McHenry County Historical Society Volume 14 they list the following
from the 'Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farmers and Breeders.
McHenry County Illinois 1917'
CARR, F.L. (Adelia Bowen) ch May, Claude, Harry; Marengo R4 Coral, Sec 17
060a(1867)
(...the 060a means he had 60 acres and 1867 is when he came to the county)
I'm almost positive that Darius CARR was Franklin's father. If that's so,
here's what I have on Darius. From the 'Biographical Directory of the
Tax-payers and Voters of McHenry County' published by Walker & Co, Chicago,
IL 1877 and reproduced by Unigraphic, Inc., 1401 N. Fares Avenue,
Evansville, Indiana 74411 in 1966:
Page 321: "CARR, Darius, Farmer, Sec. 3; Marengo P.O.; born in New York;
came to McHenry Co. in 1857; owns 72 acres of land, valued at $60 per acre.
Married Thankful Spencer in 1830; has nine children."
In the 1850 McHenry Co, Algonquin Township Census Darius(37) shows as being
married to Thankful(32) with children of James(12), Andrew(10), Lyman(7),
Lafayette(4), Perry(3), and William(5/12). I missed them in the 1860
Census but in the 1870 Darius is now 57, the first female in the family is
listed as Elvira age 56(I first thought this was his second wife which is
still possible but that conflicts with the listing above from the 1877
Directory). The children are listed as Perry(22), William(19),
Frank(17)(which would match with your date for Franklin's birth), Geo(12)
and Jehial(10)(in the public domain land listings there is also a Jehiel
CARR listed as buying land in 1844...more on him below).
In the 1850 Census there is a Jehiel P CARR in Marengo Township who is 38,
born in NY and a shoemaker. His wife is listed as Lovina age 33 also born
in NY and his children are Carlista, 15 born in PA, Lorenzo, 12 born in PA,
and Lovilla, 8 also born in PA.
In 1860 he's still in Marengo as J.P. CARR, age 50, Lovina is still there
and 46, Lovilla is now 17 and now living with them is Elizabeth CARR, age
82, born in NJ
In 1870 it's now specified that Jehiel is in the City of Marengo and aged
60, his wife is listed as L.C. age 56, there's a male named S.L. CARR, aged
32 and born in PA(I assume this is Lorenzo)...also listed with the family
is a lone female named N.S. GRAVES aged 28 and born in PA(could this be
what I read as Lovilla?) with two children also named GRAVES, Willie (5)
born in MO and Lillie (2) born in IL.
I also found the descriptions and dates of the three public domain land
purchases made by Darius from 1840 to 1842 (just short of 120 acres). I
think these may be reflected in the old McHenry County Atlas which the
Woodstock library has but I didn't check those today.
You should be able to eliminate the following names from your seaching
since they belong to the Joseph CARR family of Ringwood. Joseph b. Aug
1802; Hannah b. 1809; Richard H b. 1831; Thomas b. 1831; William D. b 1835;
Jabez b. 1838; Wright b. 1840; and George b. 1843.
My intention was to go obit searching from the films of the Woodstock
Sentinal for you and for another CARR researcher in McHenry but two guys
were hogging the film readers and I couldn't get to them. I'll try to get
back up there soon but I can't guarantee when I will but when I do I'll
have a look to see what I can find.
