If you don't have a name for the male, Father sounds nicer that Unknown, I
have several with dates and states but no name,ie, I have 2 of their
children, but don't know their name, I don't call children Father, just
the male HH, had not thought about using mother for Unknown female, in
that case since I don't have her last name I do use Unknown. Also this
puts the male HH in the right place in an alpha list.
As for the comment on WFT, folks are sending their names to world connect,
and using these estimated dates that they copied right out of WFT.

It is all a matter of perspective. If you're going back into your roots,
an unknown male progenitor is very logically Father Carr. But looking at it
from a family tree, moving from a single known progenitor toward the present
day, you end up with unknown male and female children. Doesn't seem very
logical to name unknown children as Father and Mother when you don't even
know if they've had the honor.
As for World Family Tree, I find the dates ugly, but I accept them
as
part of the new landscape. Not much you or I can do about them, is
there?
I like having places listed as city, ST (Name of Co), but I can't enforce
my format on others. I don't find others' formats annoying; I just change my
database to reflect my own style. You might find more peace in that
seemingly more pragmatic approach.
