Dear Lorna and the list,
Your Robert Carr of NC and GA intrigues me. Here's what I know about my
branch:
A Henry Carr from Early Co., GA married Mary Griffin, dau of John and Mary
Griffin, long before 1800. I have a clipping somewhere!
A Henry Carr, possibly the same man, was the sheriff of Early Co., GA and was
the first (and only) hangman. A Henry Carr, too young to be the same man, is
the father of William Austin Carr, Jr. who moved to Mississippi as an adult,
after marrying Virginia Hawkins, the daughter of Senator Benjamin Hawkins
(Senator from NC, Indian agent at Ft. Hawkins, Crawfordsville, GA) . William
Austin Carr Sr., presumably Henry Carr's father, is listed as "b 20 May
1763"
in my grandmother's work, but I have no source and she is long gone. I have
in the past spent a lot of effort trying to disprove parts of her work, and in
doing so have found her work to be reliable, for what that's worth.
I have since found family records (from the archives in Atlanta) that list
Henry as "Henry Alexander Carr" which include my family members.
I am also aware that a family of William A. Carr resided in a county on the SC
border (where are those notes!) and that man was a state legislator. The "A"
was not Alexander, and his descendants do not line up with those in my family.
A short list of the first generation after Henry:

A separate listing of a family residing in the same county (Yalobusha, MS) and
living adjacent to the family whose descendants married Carrs:
A Jonathan Carr resided adjacent the Pearson family, whose daughter married a
Carr from another line. This line included Jonathan, b c 1850 and wife Ann E.
(both born in NC). Children
Henry E. Carr, 23 (b c 1837) NC
J. H. or J. W. Carr, 21 (b c 1839) NC
William A. Carr, 19 (b c 1841) NC
James H. Carr, 17,(b c 1843) NC
Lucy Jane Carr, 12 (b c 1848) NC
Sarah E. Carr, 9 (b c 1851) NC
Temperence Carr, 7 (b c 1853) NC
Edward M. Carr, 4 (b c 1856) NC
Samuel Carr, 2 (b c 1858) NC
Anna Carr, 1 (b c 1859) MS
Note: The William A. and Henry in that familiy lead me to wonder if they are
brother / cousins to Henry.
Also, "Uncle Tobe's black book included the story that his Carr ancestors
arrived from Ireland in Savannah GA, and they lived in GA for a time, moved to
NC for some years, and then returned to GA." Uncle Tobe lived 1836-1923 and
this story was passed through a great-aunt. I am aware of Carrs in NC but
have not found this missing link.
One record from my grandmother's work indicates that a Phillip Carr or Patrick
Carr was the immigrant, or at least the father of William Sr. I have not
found any of that name. I also don't know if I'm looking in the mid- to
late-1700's or in the 1600's.
Thanks for sharing your info, let me know if anything rings a bell.

(the same guy who mistakely thought his Carrs and Overtons were related - it
was the Pearsons and Overtons, the Pearsons married Carrs and a Carr
descendant carried the Overton middle name.)
