Have just spent about an hour viewing your familytreemaker web site and the
Carr Family. To say I am impressed would be an understatement - it is
awesome, unbelievable, fantastic - what can I say. The first thought I have
is the amount of work you have invested, second is the amount of patience you
are blessed with -
Anyway I am interested in my g3grandfather (subject). Butted my head against
that brick wall for many a year and had no success finding anything about
William A. Carr from Mecklenburg Co,NC until I came across a copy of a legal
document involving another Carr which depicted the name spelled both ways
Kerr & Carr. I began my search of Kerr's and learned that his father was
Joseph Kerr, Jr son of Joseph Kerr. Cyndi Curran tied the last piece of the
puzzle together when she advised that Joseph was the oldest of four brothers
which included Andrew, Robert, and John all from Philadelphia that settled in
Mecklenburg.
My question is who provided you the info on William A. Carr, death date, and
burial location - would like to correspond with them. Incidentally, William
left Mecklenburg in early 1830's with his two sons ( David Stuart/Stewart and
William Stanhope) and their families and relocated in Butts Co. GA. David S.
and William relocated to MS while Stanhope remained in Butts Co. After
moving to Butts Co the name Carr
is used by all parties.
Bill Carr

Pat - when I began my research of the Kerr's in Mecklenburg I had no idea
which one I might be related to. Consequently, I ordered and received wills
and marriage licenses on several of them. William
Alexander Kerr appears to be the only child of Margaret and Joseph Kerr, Jr.
Joseph Kerr, Jr's will leaves everything to wife Margaret and William
Alexander is the only child mentioned in the will and is
co-exectutor with Margaret. Have been unable to find any record on when
Margaret died or if she had a will. Joseph Jr died 12-28-1821 and is buried
at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church - Mecklenburg Co. Tombstone inscription
says he was buried in 81 st year means born 1740 which is confirmed by his
sister's genealogy - Rachel Kerr Crockett. She was born in1738, m Robert
Crockett, d 2-17-1822 in Giles Co, TN. Joseph Kerr, Sr m Elizabeth McKane
2-2-1733 in Philadelphia, PA and his will list four children - the preceeding
Rachel and Joseph, Jr plus Elizabeth b abt 1842, m. Isaac Parker, and William
b abt1844 and preceeded his father in death per Joseph Kerr, Sr's will.
William Alexander was still in Mecklenburg as late as 1829 best I can tell.
His last recorded property sale was in 1829. His property sale in Butts Co,
GA match his signature's in Mecklenburg.
Am fairly certain the spelling of W A Carr's sons names are David Stewart
Carr and William Stanhope Carr. Lorene Shanks, now deceased, wrote me Feb
3, 1977 that she had viewed David Stewart's will and that is how she spelled
it. Lorene was the granddaughter of David Stewart and daughter of Cicero
Anderson Carr and Martha Ann Duke.
I see one of your sources is George Weaver of Jackson, GA. - his
greatgrandmother, Victoria, and my great grandfather, James Monroe Carr were
brother and sister. James Monroe b 4-17-1847, Butts Co, d 1904, m Narcissis
Ann Coody Jan 1866. She was b 1-3-1841, d 1919 - both buried Mount Zion
Church, Union, MS.
Pat, am still working on this " can of worms" - when I get it in more
readable form I will mail you a copy - need your address.
Who is David Johnson? See Cyndi Curran list him as a source at
Familytreemaker.
Bill Carr
P S Have been to William Alexander (Kerr) Carr's grave in Clarke Co., MS -
says he was 80 years of age, d 12-25-1848, means born 1768 in Mecklenburg.
