I'm looking for information on Robert CARR, b. abt. 1852, m. Lucy Ann
King, b. abt 1852. They were listed on the 1880 Soundex in Bland Co., VA.
They were probably born there or in Giles Co., VA.
Thanks,

It is the third group (Thomas and Robert Carr who settled in VA about 1700)
that interests me.
I would like to hear from anyone who descended from these brothers or has
more information about them
and their descendants.
I have a Mary Carr, b. bet 1800-1810; she was in the 30-40 age bracket in the
1840 Giles Co., VA census.
I am trying to find her ancestors.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Pam Kerschner

Dear Pat,
Thanks so much for your message and your offer to help.
Here is what I have on Mary CARR. She was born ca. 1804
in Virginia. I do not know if she was a single mother or a
window in the 1840 and 1850 Giles Co., VA census. For an unknown
reason, she and her family were listed as COX in the 1850 census.
I assumed she died aft. 1850 census and bef. 1860 census.
I believe they were living in the part of Giles Co. that became part
of Bland Co., VA, near Mechanicsburg. Following are
census records of this family:
1840 Giles Co., VA census, ( yes, Mary Carr is listed as head of house)
Mary Carr: Males: Under 5: 1; 10-15: 1; 15-20: 1;
Females: 5-10: 2; 10-15: 1; 15-20: 1; 30-40: 1
1850 Giles Co., VA:
Dwelling 700; Family 693:
Mary Cox, 46
Jane Cox, 28
Elizabeth Cox, 23
Sarah Cox, 18
Matilda Cox, 15 (my gg grandmother)
Dwelling 701; Family 694:
William Cox, 24
Sarah Cox, 22
Mary (?) Cox, 3
Nancy Cox, 1
George Cox, 6
Addison Cox, 4
Isaac Cox, (?/12)
1860 Giles Co., VA
Dwelling 826; Family 771:
Matilda Carr, 24
Robert Carr, 8
Mary Carr, 6
John Carr, 3
William Carr, 1 (my g grandfather)
Dwelling 827; Family 772:
Ballard P. Thompson, 40
? (poss. Ilene) Thompson, 35
? (poss. Hester) Thompson, 1
George W. Carr, 16
Addison Carr, 13
Isaac P. Carr, 10
John (? poss. B.) Carr, 5
Mary A. Bruce, 9, Idiotic
1870 Bland Co., VA
Dwelling 105; Family 105:
John C. Preston, 32
Matilda Preston, 33
Mary Carr, 15
John Carr, 13
William Carr, 12
George Carr, 10
Isabel Carr, 8
Mary CARR's daughter, Matilda CARR, b. prob. June 1837,
must have been a single mother. She already had six children
when she married John C. PRESTON on 24 March 1870 then
they had one child, Samuel PRESTON, b. ca. 1871.
I truly appreciate any help you can give me.

REPLY:
I have several emails from you. I've been checking my mail in a bizarre
order, jumping around in time, so pardon any strange reply pattern that might
result.
You sent me both a family layout and the census records. You only show two
children for William. I'll bet William and Sarah had six children: Mary,
Nancy, George, Addison, Isaac, and John. Mary was already listed as head of
household in 1840; doesn't seem likely she would have had children after
that. Looks like the census taker listed the girls first, then the boys in
1850. Maybe Thompsons have taken in surviving children of William and Sarah?
Matilda could have married a cousin named Carr circa 1851, and he could have
died circa 1860. You might check the mortality index for 1860 census --
listing of persons who've died within a year of the census. Seems odd that
she would have so many children out of wedlock, no?
They could also be a sibling's kids. Who's the 15-20 yr old male in the 1840
census? William's older brother, right? Any thoughts about him? Doesn't seem
likely the kids would be his -- How do you explain John b 1855, obviously a
sibling of the others, if the older brother is dead in 1850? Kind of rules
that out, eh?
Interesting problem. Wish I could help you more.
