Hello to all fellow Carr researchers:
I have a question for those of you that perhaps have been able to see the
book written by E.C. Carr in 1894 on the Carr Family. I have the book Little
Compton Families and under the Carr family it cites from the above Carr book
the following:
There is an old Bible that came down from William Carr, dated 1585, On the
first blank page written in a woman's hand is the following. "My maiden name
was Susan Rothschild and born in Devonshire 30 April 1598. I married 16 May
1619 William Carr of London. ......... In 1636 Capt. Roger Williams, who had
abandoned the sea, moved from Salem, bringing with him a colony of friends
and settled with us. The same year he founded the state of Rhode Island and
named our place Bristol."
I am sure most of you have seen this somewhere. My question is. Does anyone
have a copy of this book and if so does it actually say "The same year he
founded the state of Rhode Island ...." As a direct quote from this woman?
My cousin, who is far more learned than I when it comes to history, says that
if it really states this, than more than likely it is a false document.
Seeing as Rhode Island did not even become a state until 1790, it would have
been impossible for this woman Susan Rothschild to have written this in a
bible sometime in the 1600's.
Perhaps this has just over the years been misquoted and was maybe originally
in the book with () as an explanation and not as a quote from the bible.
Thanks so much for everyones time.
