also, Hello!
I am a descendant of James Monroe Whiteside (born 1818 Buncombe
Co NC,
died Shelby Co. TX, son of Moses Whiteside. Family moved from NC to
Calhoun Co, AL after 1830 sometime) and Nancy Ann Kerr (born 1830
Georgia, died December 1870 Shelby Co. TX). They were married June 11,
1848 in Randolph Co., Arkansas. They moved to Arkansas from Calhoun Co.
Al and then on to Texas.
I have nothing but circumstantial evidence that Nancy Ann Kerr
is the
daughter of Hugh Kerr and Sarah Wilson, married in Hall Co. Georgia in
1820. Perhaps you know? I would love to know more about both the Kerr
and Wilson families.
Here are the facts that I know and my thoughts about them:
On November 1, 1849, the following people bought land in Township 21N,
Range 1E Randolph County Arkansas, obviously as a group (note
consecutive document numbers!).
William E. Kerr (Doc#3180 -- 40 acres, SESE Sec. 11)
Joseph W. Kerr (Doc#3181 -- 80 acres, N1/2NW Sec. 24)
Joseph Wilson (Doc#3182 -- 40 acres, SESW Sec. 25)
James M. Whiteside (Doc#3183 -- 40 acres, NWSE Sec. 3)
Andrew M. Whiteside (Doc#3184 -- 80 acres, N1/2SW Sec. 34)
Hugh Kerr (Doc#3185 -- 40 acres, NENE Sec. 14)
A marriage record shows that James M. Whiteside married Nancy A. Karr in
Randolph Co. Arkansas on June 11, 1848. Land records show her name as
Nancy Ann Whiteside.
James died in 1861 in Shelby County, Texas and Nancy A. Kerr Whiteside
married Alex Milstead. Nancy A. Kerr Whiteside Milstead died in 1870 in
Shelby County, and Alex married Nancy A. Wilson the following year.
Per the 1880 census, Nancy A. Wilson was born in Alabama but her sister
Lucy was born in Arkansas and their father is Joseph -- I am surmising
that they are children of the same Joseph who bought land with James M.
Whiteside in 1849.
Furthermore, Hugh Kerr and Benjamin Wilson bought land together in
Township 13 South - 10 East of Huntsville Meridian, Benton (Calhoun)
County, Alabama on August 1, 1837. Benjamin Wilson may have been a
brother-in-law to Hugh Kerr or Sarah Wilson's father. Joseph Wilson may
have been her brother or a nephew and is probably a son of Benjamin
Wilson.
In 1845, Moses Whiteside and his family moved from NC to township in
Benton County, T14S-9E. He was a next door neighbor to Hugh Kerr! That
is no doubt when James M. Whiteside met Nancy Kerr and then he moved to
Arkansas with the Kerr family and his first cousin Andrew Whiteside.
Hugh Kerr and Sarah Wilson married in Hall Co. Georgia in 1820 probably
left there in 1837 when the family moved to Alabama.
The Kerr's and Whiteside's moved to Texas in the 1850's, but Benjamin
Absalom Wilson stayed on (same age as Sarah Wilson, so perhaps a
brother?) The scoop on him (from a Randolph Co. History book) is that
he was born in Hall Co. GA in 1810, the son of John Wilson of
Greenville, SC. He moved to Calhoun Co. AL and then to Randolph Co.
AR. So, Benjamin Wilson lived in Greenville, SC -> Hall Co, GA ->
Calhoun Co, AL -> Randolph Co, AR.
Thank you for reading all of this!!! I would love to know your thoughts
and whatever you know that may shed light on Nancy Ann Kerr and her kin.
Lee Ann
