I have two old NJ documents I picked up in Trenton of interest re Carr:
1) Will of James Brown, Providence, RI dated 11 Dec 1765. Mentions Capt James
Carr as follows:
"Item: I give to my daughter in law Mary Brown, widow of my son James Noyce
Brown, all that can be recovered of her deceased husband's estate or what
shall be found due from my attorney Capt Richard Hide of Norwich & from Capt
James Carr on account of what I paid to Esquire Backees (?) of Norwich for an
execution obtained against me for my son James being bound for said Carr's
appearance at the suit of John Read, & five pounds Connecticutt's lawful
bills to be paid by my executors provided she, my said daughter in law, give
to me, my heirs & executors a full discharge from every incumbrance on
account of my bond given to the Court of Probates, otherwise this clause to
be void and of no effect."
2) Will of James Vernon, of Springfield Twp, Burlington Co, NJ, dated 15 Jan
1796 mentions daughter Hester and son-in-law James Carr. "Seventh, I give
and bequeath to my daughter Hester Carr all my lot of land lying and being in
the Township of Mansfield, County of Burlington, state of New Jersey and
bounded as follows . . . containing two acres three roods and thirteen square
perches of land be the same more or less to her the said Hester Carr her
heirs and assigns forever after paying all my just debts and funeral
expenses, and lastly I make and constitute my son in law James Carr my
Executor and Heir at law of this my last will and testament . . ." Will
probated 28 Feb 1796, Abraham and Thomas Rakestraw, witnesses.
I've often wondered if Hester Vernon was identical with Esther Varnell, who
married James Carr and raised a family in Burlington Co, NJ. James and
Esther moved to Wayne Co, PA in early 1800s.
