Just joined your group and I like what I see in the welcome message.. . .
Now, when he gave me the information that catapulted me into
collecting family tree data, he also told me that his father was born in
Albemarle County, Virginia, near Boyd's Tavern. As Virginia is full of
SCOTCH-IRISH, I am making a leap into thinking I might be able to find out
more about this place.
Boyd's Tavern, Albemarle County, Virginia.
Exactly where was it?---Near Charlottesville (I64 & US 29 and 250) in w. VA.
Was it a meeting house in 1700's & 1800's?---Define "meeting
house."
Was it also a hotel-type establishment?---It probably was the location of a
tavern.
When was it established?---Good question. Probably in the late 1600s/1700s.
Is there any old or new written data on this place?---It's not listed in the
USGS GNIS data base as a building or civil jurisdiction. The name DOES ring a bell.
Is it possible there might be a photo or a drawing of it?---Another good
question.
Does it still exist?---Another good question. I would suggest that you write to
the Chamber of Commerce in Charlottesville and ask them what they know about it. From
experience in MD, it could just be a crossroads now which in the past WAS the
location
of watering hole for travelers on their way elsewhere.
Did National Geographic ever do a spread on it?
<G>---Could very well be. It could have been a piece on VA Colonial taverns or the
Charlottesville or Albemarle
County. NG has picked some real esoteric subjects at
times.
