Obituary: Walter F. "Baldy" Carr Jr. of Franklin, a retired police sergeant,
died Thursday at Franklin House
Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness. He was 73.
A lifelong resident of Franklin, Mr. Carr was a 1937 graduate of Franklin
High School.
He served on the Franklin Police Department for more than
25 years, retiring with the rank of sergeant in 1970. While on the force,
Mr. Carr was safety officer for 16
years and director of the Massachusetts Safety Officers for six years.
After retiring, Mr. Carr became supervisor of attendance for the Franklin
Public Schools, retiring this year
after 23 years of service.
He was a charter member and past exalted ruler of the Franklin Lodge of
Elks. He was also a member of the
Franklin VFW Post 3402 and the Franklin Rod and Gun Club.
Mr. Carr also served as financial secretary of the Franklin Country Club. He
was a communicant of St.
Mary's Church in Franklin and an usher for 35 years.
In 1990, Mr. Carr was chosen Fourth of July parade marshal in Franklin.
He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Division Airborne during World War II and
received many medals,
including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He leaves his brother, Joseph S. of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today at St.
Mary's Church, Franklin.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Franklin.
