Obituary: William J. Carr of Randolph, a retired attorney and Randolph town
counsel, died Dec. 18. He was
78.
Born in Somerville and raised in Charlestown, Mr. Carr was a 1937 graduate
of Boston Latin School, a 1941
graduate of Harvard College, and a 1948 graduate of Boston College Law School.
He served as a pilot and lieutenant commander in the Naval Air Corps during
World War II.
A Boston attorney for 48 years, Mr. Carr was a public defender in U.S.
District Court from 1962 to 1986.
He served as Randolph town counsel for 35 years and was counsel to Blue
Hills Regional School District for
26 years. He was the Randolph town moderator from 1956 to 1961.
He was a member of the Norfolk County and Massachusetts Bar Associations,
the City Solicitors and Town
Counsel Associations, St. Mary's Choir in Randolph, South Shore Men of
Harmony in Scituate, the Hummers
and Strummers in Weymouth, Randoph Arts Lottery Committee, Randolph
Democratic Town Committee,
Town Rationing Board, and Old Colony Harvard Club.
He enjoyed playing the guitar and shared his music with the homeless,
shut-ins and people in nursing care
centers throughout Greater Boston. He performed every Christmas and
Thanksgiving at Pine Street Inn.
Carr was a former member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks,
Amvets, Massachusetts
Commandry, Catholic Alumni Sodality, Junior Chamber of Commerce, South Shore
Antique Auto Club, and
Randolph PTA.
He is survived by his wife, Marie M. (Morrissey); a son, Geoff of
Marshfield; four daughters, Deborah
Journalist of Connecticut, Nancy Noonan of New York, Jackie of Vermont and
Jeanne Quealy of Walpole;
five brothers, Frank H. Jr. of Melrose, Joseph A. of Everett, Robert D. of
Scituate, Thomas of Burlington,
and Philip X. of Charlestown; two sisters, Mary E. Simeone of Weston and Ann
Donahue of Winthrop; 10
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Dec. 21 and burial was in St.
Mary's Cemetery.
