Named 'Woman of the Year' for contributions to Cape
HYANNIS - Diane Carr, 49, of Hyannis, named Business and Professional
Woman of the Year in 1998 for her many contributions to the Cape, died
Thursday at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.She was born in Wareham
and raised in Barnstable where she graduated from Barnstable High School.
In 1969 she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, State
University of New York, and went to work for Doyle, Dane & Bernbach
Advertising Agency in New York City.
Ms. Carr later earned a degree in planning and management at the
University of Massachusetts and a certificate in politics and public policy
from its McCormack Institute.
On the Cape and islands, she was director, manager or executive director
for many organizations, including the Cape Cod Convention Bureau in
Centerville, The Camp Fire Inc., Barnstable Council on Aging, J.F.K.
Museum, Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce, Cape & Island Partnership
to reduce Substance Abuse in Hyannis and the Job Training and
Employment Corporation of Hyannis.
At the time of her death, she had been the director of the Consumer
Assistance Council in Hyannis for nearly two years.
Ms. Carr also was very active in over 16 community organizations, many
of which focused on mentoring women and encouraging them to participate
in politics,, government and business. Among them were the Massachusetts
Junior Miss Scholarship Program, Cape & Islands Prevention Partnership
Inc., Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, Network for Women in Politics and, as
chairperson, the Cape Cod Women's Roundtable.
As a result of Ms. Carr's involvement in business and service to her
community, she was honored as Woman of the Year in 1998 by the
Business and Professional Women's Club of Cape Cod.
She is survived by her parents, Christine Farber and Donald Carr of
Hyannis, a son, Christian "C.T." Olander of Greenwich, Conn.; a daughter,
Niisa Olander of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Gale Carr of Nevada and many
relatives and dear friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at our
Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial will be at the family's
convenience.
Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Doane, Beal &
Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis.
