Historical records indicate Paddy Carr of Ft. Mitchell, AL was the son of a Creek Indian
and Erin Carr of Cork, Ireland. Erin was an Indian trader and possibly a partner with one
of the Crowell brothers in a trading post before Ft. Mitchell was formed. Erin, as far as
known, was in this country alone and returned to Cork, Ireland when his sons, Thomas and
Paddy were infants and he left them in the care of the Crowell family. There is no record
of his having returned from Ireland. Paddy was born in 1807, but date of birth for Thomas
is unkown. Paddy had 3 wives and he took 2 of them plus 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls to
Oklahoma with the removal there in 1838. However, he returned to Russell County, AL to
his 3rd wife and small son per verbal history, and is buried in the Ft. Mitchell cemetary.
This information came from a rare history book that was assisted in its writing and
publication by the Director of the Historical Society of Alabama. I have a copy in my
libra!
ry, given to me by one of the contributors and it has been valuable to me in teaching
Ala. history.
