I am afraid your informant regarding Paddy Carr's father's buriel in Ft. Mitchell
is incorrect, based upon my rare historical book, "Russell County in
Retrospect". The father returned to Ireland and never came back. He left the 2 sons
by his Indian wife with the Crowell family in Ft. Mitchell and Paddy was an infant. This
same information was handed down verbally in my husband's family and they were from
the same area. I find there is much mis-information regarding Paddy Carr out there and do
wonder why. This book partially answers my question in that he and brother Thomas
attended Asbury Mission School near Ft. Mitchell (Methodist) and Thomas converted to
Christianity. Paddy did not and took 3 wives, concurrently. The gov. agreed that if he
helped rout out the Seminoles in FL he could remain on his lands and he did this with a
troop of 900 warriors. However, with taking of these lands, this meant statehood as Ala.
was already a state. This meant he could have only !
1 wife (at a time). The youngest had a small infant and the trip was too dangerous for
travel. So, the older 2 wives and their 4 children he escorted west after selling his
lands to finance the trip. The 3rd wife remained with a family in what was then Pike
County. It is well documented that he returned to Ala. where he lived and died. Russell
County was created out of Pike.
