Hello,
Is your Carr line by any chance related to the one that was in Indiana
around 1820's? Corydon, Indiana--1st Capital after Indiana became a state?
Seems that I read about a Carr or two being involved in drawing up the
Indiana State constitution.
Jonathon Jennings was the newly elected Governor at the time following a hard
fought battle for the governorship against William Henry Harrison. I am a
Jennings but to my knowledge not related to this Jonathon. But the Carr name
has stayed with me(in memory).
There was also a Lane in Corydon at this time who also signed the State
contitution. My G-g-g-grandfather was a James Jennings. He moved to St.
Louis and on the advice of a college friend-- William Carr Lane bought a
large tract of land N. of ST L., MO. I have a letter written by my
G-g-g-grandfather (James Jennings) to President James Monroe. Across the top
of the letter is written --
1824, Corydon. In this letter he introduces William Carr Lane to James
Monroe. William Carr Lane later went on to become Mayor of St. Louis and
was re-elected several times. He was also Governor of New Mexico Territory.
He practiced medicine having attended medical school in Philadelphia (where
he met my G-g-g-grandfather) and was a professor of the first medical school
in St Louis. He was born in Pennslyvania. Hope I didn't bore you.
It is the history that makes genealogy so interesting to me. Even if it's
not specifically about my family. At any rate this Carr Lane could be a
descendent of a Carr family somwhere. Good luck on your research.
G. A
Jennings

To those of you researching CARRs in Clark County, Indiana, the Bicentennial
commemorative history I wrote last fall of Silver Creek Baptist Church (now
known as Stony Point Christian Church), which includes about 125 years of
abstracted church records, is available at the Charlestown, Sellersburg and
Jeffersonville public libraries.
The CARRs and the DRUMMONDs were prominent and early members of the church.
We had 200 copies of the book printed for the Bicentennial on 11/22/1998.
About 150 of them have been sold as a fundraiser for the church building
fund. Copies are still available for purchase, but I can't say for how.
Additional information on the book is available at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5881/book.html
The following are some excerpts from the abstracted church records which
make reference to CARR members:
07/11/1801 Received Elisha Carr by experience after adjournment.
08/27/1801 The Church met at Bro. Carr’s on Silver Creek; two-day
meeting. Nancy Carr and Nelly Stewart received by experience.
05/08/1802 Elisha Carr chosen Deacon. {He held this post until
11/23/1822.}
09/11/1802 Bro. Harrod still aggrieved with Bro. Abbet; recommended the
Brothers try to settle their dispute. Bro. Downs, Bro. Coombs, Bro. Newland
and Bro. Carr to try to settle the matter.
07/09/1803 John Pettet is secluded until restored by repentance. Brethren
Kellar and Dupree to attend on us every 4th Lord’s Day in every two months
alternatively. Sister Huckleberry reports that she wishes to remain with the
Church. Bro. Harrod acknowledges himself guilty of transgression; upon his
confession he is forgiven. Peace abounded. Bro. Elisha Carr and Bro. William
Coombs to employ a person to build the new meeting house. “Bro. Harrod
requests the church to release him from the office of an elder,” and the
church defers the matter “for further consideration.” Request to be sent to
Plumb Creek Church “for ministerial help to attend us at our stated
meetings” (second Lord’s Day each month).
03/11/1809 Bro. Royse did not appear but Church received information from
Sister Royse that has “removed the grievance of the Church with him”. Bro.
Carr, of his own accord, “expresses a dissatisfaction with himself on
account of his liquor to excess.” The church says that the brother shall be
“reproved by Bro. Reece, and forgiven.”
07/08/1809 Elisha Carr, John Fislar, John Peyton, James McCoy and Joseph
Pound to settle the distress between Bro. Downs and Bro. Hart.
Reconciliation obtained. Question: “Can any person in like circumstance with
Jincy Smith be received into fellowship of the Church?”Answer: No.
07/21/1810 Brethren William Goodwin, Elisha Carr and John Fislar to serve
as Messengers to next Association meeting. Three shillings to be sent to
defray expenses. Bro. and Sister Saffer requested letters of dismission;
granted.
09/28/1813 Bro. Miller appeared to make satisfaction for his
non-attendance and made a statement of his procedure in a lawsuit. Dispute
between Bro. Broadstreet and Bro. and Sister Carr resolved.
09/24/1814 Bro. Carr is aggrieved with Bro. William E. Collings, but
Church declines to become involved.
11/02/1816 Received by experience Elisha Carr, Jr., Elisabeth Carr, James
Whorall and Sally Reed.
04/26/1817 Received Bro and Sister Lucy Young, Presly Arturburn, Sally
Arturburn, Charles Peirce {Pierce}, and Moses Sellers by letter; received by
experience Elisabeth Stacy, Rachel Brightman, Hannah Carr and James Worrall.
03/21/1818 Bro. Elisha Carr, Sr. came forward and told the church that he
had “start{ed} his team on the Sabbath to Salem”. After stating the
emergency of the case, the Church was satisfied.
11/23/1822 Bro. and Sister Carr requested letters of dismission; granted.
Bro. Amos Goodwin chosen Deacon to fill the vacancy created by Bro. Carr’s
departure.
10/25/1828 Received by experience Milla Carr.
06/27/1829 OBITUARY: Sister Hannah Carr departed this life the 4th
instant. “The graves of all his saints are blest and soften every bed where
should the dying member rest but with its lying head.”
05/22/1839 Rebecca Carr and Margaret Harris confessed the Lord and was
baptised.
There are many, many more CARR references in the book. Just kinda pulled
these out at random.
BTW, the church did not maintain marriage records, per se. There are some
references in the book to so-and-so and his wife, such-and-such. There are
some obituaries included in the record (see above).
