ROBERT W. CARR, 77, of Dory Road, chief harbormaster for the City of
Warwick, and a retired financial planner, died Friday at Kent County
Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Ellen V. (Whitten) Carr. Born in
Taunton, Mass., a son of the late Ralph E. and Helen N. (Crossman) Carr, he
had lived in Nantucket, Mass., before moving to Providence and then to
Warwick in 1947.
Mr. Carr had been the chief harbormaster for 10 years, and had previously
worked at New England Telephone in Boston for 41 years before retiring in
1987, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He had trained the Warwick Police and Fire Departments in safe boating and
CPR, and was a founder and past member of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotila
705. Mr. Carr had been a member of the U.S. Power Squadron-Greenwich Bay,
District 14, for 50 years, and had held all offices on the local and
district levels.
He was a founding member of the former Warwick Community Volunteer
Association, and had been treasurer of the Rhode Island Harbormaster
Association. Mr. Carr was a founding member and former secretary of the
Clam Harbor Yacht Club, and had taught safe-boating classes for the State
of Rhode Island. He was an animal lover.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Jane M. Carr of Wakefield and
Jennifer L. Carr of Warwick; a son, Jonathan R. Carr of Orlando, Fla.; and
five grandchildren.
The funeral with military honors will be held Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. from
Nardolillo Funeral Home, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, with a service at 10 in
Greenwood Community Church Presbyterian, 805 Main Ave., Warwick. Burial
will be private.
