Woman Has Heart Attack Giving Birth

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A pregnant woman who suffered a heart attack over the
weekend underwent open-heart surgery moments after giving birth to premature
twin girls.
Eliz Greene, 35, said she tried to remember soothing melodies as she faced
the prospect of triple-bypass surgery while her twins were delivered by
Caesarean section Sunday - seven weeks early.
``I just sort of laid there and sang Jimmy Buffett songs in my head to stay
calm,'' she told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
She had been at St. Joseph's Hospital since October, confined to bed after
doctors stopped her premature labor. An artery wall split, requiring
immediate surgery to restart her stopped heart.
One girl, Grace, was born at 2:42 p.m. and the other, Callie, at 2:43 p.m.
Then came five hours of heart surgery for their mother.
By Monday, she was able to hold her baby daughters for the first time.
``We were incredibly unlucky - and incredibly lucky the same day,'' said Eliz
Greene, who is expected to make a full recovery.
Doctors buzzed about the case, which required the services of various
specialists simultaneously.
``In all of our disciplines, we'll probably all see this once in a
lifetime,'' said Dr. Margaret Carr, the obstetrician who delivered the twins.
