PERRY CHARLES CARR (1867- 1950)
Perry and Sophronia Carr
The lands of southwest rural Georgia in the war reconstruction era
following the Civil War was the setting for the birthplace of Perry Charles
Carr,
born September 8, 1867, to parents Henry A. Carr and Mary Atchison Martin.
The Carr family had been very prominent plantation owners in and
around Bibb County, Georgia, from the earliest years of the nineteenth
century. Perry's great-grandfather, Henry Carr (1775-1847) had been the
brother-in-law of Colonel Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816) who had been
President Washington's personal emissary to the Five Civilized Tribes of
Georgia. Colonel Hawkins was a fluent linguist in many Indian languages as
well as European languages and lived for many years among the tribes
of early Georgia. Many Georgia counties have commemorative place names in
honor of Colonel Hawkins but he is most closely associated with Fort
Hawkins or the town of Hawkinsville.
