Paula,
I have the 1880 Census issued by LDS. I'm not familiar with the British
1881 census CDs, but the U.S. Census has a full index, which you can search
for your Carr's by name, birth date range, state, and region. In addition,
you can search by going to the individual CD, too. The CDs are arranged by
Region, then by state and are so named on each CD.
The information is not an actual copy of the original census transcript, but
rather a typed version, which gives the following information on each
person: full name, age, birthplace (usually just a state or country),
occupation, relationship to the family unit, and town/township, county and
state where the census was taken. When you find your family, you can also
search for their neighbors by scrolling up or down. You can print out your
family information once you find them.
A word of caution -- because it is a typed copy and not the original
transcript, check the original census to be sure of the information. LDS
has provided the LDS roll number, plus the Federal Archives Roll number
along with the page number where the family unit is located.
I was finally successful in finding two of my ancestors, who lived in
Chicago. They had alluded me for many years due to the size of the
population in Chicago at that time and the number of rolls of film I needed
to check. It is well worth the cost (about $1/CD) if you have several "lost
ancestors".

Subject: [CARR-L] 1880 US census
Does any subscriber have this set of CD's that the LDS has issued? I would
appreciate knowing what data is included on them before ordering, as I am
not familiar with the US census.
eg. I think some of my Carr's, born in Nova Scotia, Canada MAY have gone to
the US, possibly Pennsylvania, as miners. Would I be able to search by
birthplace as you can on the British 1881 census CD'S?
Thanks in advance,
