Waggoner Carr
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Waggoner Carr, a former Texas attorney general and state
representative who ate breakfast with President John F. Kennedy the day he was
assassinated, died Wednesday of cancer, his family said. He was 85.
Ernestine Carr said she and her husband had breakfast with Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22,
1963. Waggoner Carr later testified before the Warren Commission, which investigated the
assassination.
Carr served as Texas attorney general from 1963 to 1967. He was Lubbock assistant district
attorney from 1947-1948, Lubbock County attorney from 1949-1951 and state representative
from 1951-1961. He served as speaker of the House from 1957-1961.
He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1966 and for governor in 1968 before
returning to private practice.
A history buff, Carr was working on books about Jesse James and Texas attorneys general
from 1875, his family said.
