from the San Mateo County Times:
LUTHER MAYNE CARR passed away at the age of 95 on August 4, 2001 in
San
Jose. He was an attorney and one of the founders of the Burlingame law firm
of Carr, McClellan, Ingersoll, Thompson & Horn, practicing as a partner with
that firm from 1945 until his retirement in 1970. Mr. Carr was born on
July 25, 1906, in Kewanee, Illinois. At an early age his family moved to
Des Moines, Iowa. He remained in that city until his graduation from Drake
University law school in 1929 (having earlier received his B.A. from the
same university). He first entered upon his law career in Forest City, Iowa
in 1929. Then in 1932, he and his wife Mildred (who predeceased him in
1996 at the age of 90) moved to Newton, Iowa, where they remained until
1943. At that time they and their 3 boys made a "temporary" move to
Burlingame as Mr. Carr accepted an appointment as a Chief Regional Rent
Attorney for the OPA. Burlingame remained his home until his retirement in
1970 when he and his wife moved to The Villages in San Jose, which remained
his home until his death. During his time in Iowa, Mr. Carr was elected
County Attorney in 1936, and was re-elected in 1938 (serving a total of four
years in that office). In San Mateo County he occupied many positions with
the county and state bar associations, including the office of President of
the local bar in 1964 and as a member of the Board of Governors and Vice
President of the California Bar Association. Mr. Carr was named "Citizen
of the Year" in Burlingame in 1969. Among his many community and state
activities, he was president of the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce,
president of the Burlingame-San Mateo Kiwanis Club, county chairman of the
Community Chest, chairman of the Citizen's Committee to form and fund the
Peninsula Hospital District, and state president of United World
Federalists. He was a long-time member of the Christian Science Church in
each of the communities where he resided. He is survived by his second
wife, Amelia, by two sons (David, an attorney in Burlingame and Thomas, a
Presbyterian minister most recently in Gilroy), by 8 grandchildren and by 10
great-grandchildren. There is no planned memorial service and interment
will be private. The family suggests that any gifts be sent to the
Burlingame Library Foundation 480 Primrose Road, Burlingame 94010.
