Re: Carol Mitchell's query re the correct mother of Dabney Carr (1777-1862):
Thomas Carr, only son of John Carr and his first wife Mary Garland, b. 25 Nov
1735 at "Bear Castle", Louisa Co., Virginia, married (about 1760) Mary
Clarkson, daughter of Manoah Clarkson. They had the following children: John
Manoah Carr (abt 1761-aft 1819), m. Jane Meriwether Lewis; Mary Ann Carr
(1765-1853), m. Howell Lewis (1766-1845); Thomas Carr (abt 1768-aft 1801);
Samuel Carr (bef. 1772-aft 1801); and (I believe) Dabney Carr (1777-1862), m.
Lucy Law Digges. Dabney's birth year is roughly established in the 1850 U.S.
Census for Albemarle Co., VA, which lists him as a 73-year-old man.
Thomas Carr married Lucy Barksdale before he made his will in December 1802
(proved Apr 1807). Lucy appears in the 1810 U.S. Census of Albemarle Co. as
Lucy Carr, a woman over age 45 years living alone. Did Mary Clarkson die
before 1777? I believe not, though it is possible. A marriage record for
Thomas and Lucy (or a death record for Mary--unlikely) would settle the issue.
