"The Driveway? In Another State: A Blunder in 1642 Creates Headaches Today
For Homeowners Who Straddle a Border" by Paul Zielbauer, The New York Times,
Fri 26 Jan 2001, pp C1, 6
The article talks about the Notch, a small section of Massachusetts
that bulges into Connecticut's otherwise straight border with its northern
neighbor, because of a surveying error in 1642.
"Then there are Janice and Thomas Carr, whose camper caught fire and
was quickly devoured by the Notch 10 years ago. Because the Carrs
technically live in Granby [Connecticut], Granby firefighters responded to
their 911 call. But when they saw that the flaming camper was parked in a
Massachusetts patch of the Carrs' property, the firefighters rolled up their
hoses and urged the Carrs to call a fire department from that state.
Result: "The damn thing burned down," Mrs Carr said.
