Several Carr family histories have been written about the descendants of Caleb and Robert
Carr of Rhode Island. Paper documents which support the often repeated link of Caleb and
Robert to Ferniehirst Kerrs have not materialized and some argument has been given that
questions statements in Edson Carr's 'Carr Family Records'.
However, all of the biological direct male descendants of these brothers do have a
consistent record that can be evaluated. Currently several of these descendants have had
a Y chromosome DNA test conducted which shows a consistent haplotype. Other direct male
descendants of Robert and Caleb, as well as all living male Carrs, may want to have a DNA
test conducted to see if their DNA record supports this claim. Particularly where the
family genealogy is known to be uncertain.
To date, no solidly documented descendants of the Kerr's of Ferniehirst, Cessford or
Roxburgh Castles are included in the more than 60 Carr Family Y DNA haplotypes in the Carr
Family DNA Project. Hopefully, this will change soon and male descendants of these Kerrs
will join the project and provide us with their ancestors haplotype. When this happens it
will be possible for all living Carr males to determine if they may also be descendants of
these Kerrs. We will also learn the possible origin of these Carrs. Were they of Norman
descent, Germanic origins or displaced early Britons who returned with William the
Conqueror to re-establish themselves on ancient homelands. DNA tells us a great deal
about our ancestors.
The Origins of the Carr family are being unraveled in the Carr Family DNA Project.
