Hi, all -
from "The Electric Spark", Vol. 7, No. 2, Feb. 1, 1915:
Jamestown, Rhode Island
"Sudden Death of Mrs. Lucy Cory Carr, a Life-Long Resident
Mrs. Lucy Cory Carr, wife of Thomas G. Carr, died suddenly Monday afternoon,
January 11th. She had been a life long resident of the island and was an
acquaintance and friend of practically everyone. Up to the latter part of
that week she had been in her usual good health. Thursday an abcess forming
in one ear caused much pain, but as it apparently broke outwardly, Sunday,
if was not considered dangerous. Her condition Monday, however, became such
that she was hurriedly taken from her home to the surgical ward at Dr. Bates
Sanitarium. A consultation was held, but nothing could be done and she sank
rapidly until the end, which came at 4 o'clock. The cause of death ws given
as the breaking of the abscess internally; which effected the brain.
Previous to its purchase by Dr. Bates for a Sanitarium, the property was the
homestead of the Cory family and Mrs. Carr died in the house which had been
her girlhood home. She was the daughter of Captain Andrew J. and Lucy Maria
Cory, and besides her husband, a former senator of this town, she leaves
three sisters - Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, who is at present in Florida; Mrs.
Lionel H. Champlin of Bay Ridge, N.J., and Mrs. George T. Barnes of
Newburgh, N.Y. She leaves also four children -- Mr. Nicholas E. Carr and
Miss Maria Carr of Providence, Mr. George C. Carr, treasurer of the
Jamestown and Newport Ferry Co., and a former representative and Mrs. E. W.
Higbee, Jr., of Woodhaven, Long Island.
While Mrs. Carr's chief attachment was to her home, she was a member of the
Jamestown Historical Society and a member of long standing in Conancut Grange.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from her late home on the Shore
road, Rev. Stanley Hughes of Trinity Church, Newport, officiating. The
bearers were George H. Carr, B. D. Higgins, George Howland, Ralph G. P.
Hull, Ferdinand Armbrust, and William H. Brooks. The burial was in the
family plot in the Cedar cemetery. The unusually large attendance from out
of town, together with the members of Conanicut Grange and Conanicut Council
Royal Arcanum, made an exceptionally large gathering."
