I hope that the following may help you.
My understanding is that John Carr, born in Saxmundham, Suffolk, England in 1761 and
married there in 1792 to Mary Baxter, had a boot making business in Saxmundham until 1824
when he moved his business to nearby Woodbridge. This fact is supported by two issues of
Pigot's Directory and a newspaper announcement of his move.
On his death in Woodbridge in 1834 his business was continued by his son James on behalf
of his mother. The newspaper announcement of his death says that he lived for thirty years
in Saxmundham.
James Carr spent some years in Richmond-on-Thames in between Saxmundham and Woodbridge.
Richmond is where he married his first wife Charlotte Nightingale and where his first two
children John and James were born.
Mary, daughter of John Carr born in 1998, was a member of the Woodbridge household until
after her brother James died in 1863. She then became a lodger in Woodbridge till she died
in 1877. Her obituary confirms that she was the eldest daughter of John Carr and the
sister of James Carr.
John Carr seems to have had eight children. I have not done any research on them apart
from Mary and James.
Martha, a daughter of James Carr, married Henry Gibbs of Marylebone London, and lived most
of her life in Bedford. Their daughter Clara is my paternal grandmother.
