Coincidences or Corroboration? --Paisley Scotland had a recession in the 1700's and
large churches helped some weavers and related craftspersons relocate to the US, usually
to New York in the Port Washington area. Later, descendants of Walter/Thomas/ Aquila/
William (Joshua's line) married Corbetts who had been among the early emigres from
Paisley, Scotland. Perhaps it was their Paisley family connections that brought these
Carrs and Corbetts together.
Walter Carr came to Baltimore even earlier, of course, in the mid 1600's. In the book
'A Long and Strange Journey,' the author describes how King James sent dissidents
over to the Chesapeake Bay (Baltimore) area. To get the king's attention those people
must have been very active politically, more like the Northumberland sheriff Nicholas Carr
and family who were reputed to be part of the GunPowder Plot. One area near Baltimore was
named by its new residents, including Walter Carr/Carre, Gunpowder, MD, perhaps to keep
those old memories alive.
