I'm looking for information on Dabney Kerr who moved from Virginia to Ohio
around 1830. The family used the name Kerr in Ohio and Kansas and Carr in
Iowa. In case the names might ring a bell, here is his family as I know it:*
*

*DABNEY KERR *was born between 1770-1780 in Virginia. He died between
1840-1850 in* *Raccoon, Gallia, Ohio – he was on the 1840 census and but
not the 1850. He married *ELIZABETH* *A ?*. She was born in 1782 in
Virginia. She died between Oct 1854-30 Jul 1860 in Raccoon, Gallia, Ohio –
1854 was when she was identified as Dabney’s widow on the land patent and
she wasn’t on the 1860 census. In 1850 Elizabeth resided with William,
Lorenzo, Nancy, and Eliza (plus a few Burtons).
Dabney Kerr and Elizabeth A ? had the following children:
i. WILLIAM H KERR was born in 1804 in Virginia. He died
before 1880 in Morgan, Decatur, Iowa. Never married.
ii. EDWARD D KERR was born in 1806 in Virginia. He died
between 1860-1870. He married JANE SWANSON on 06 Dec 1832 in Raccoon,
Gallia, Ohio, daughter of Dennis Swanson and Sarah Freeholder. She was born
in 1811 in Virginia. She died in 1893 in Bazine, Ness, Kansas.
iii. LORENZO DOW KERR was born in 1810 in Virginia. He
died between 1885-1891 in Morgan, Decatur, Iowa. Never married.
iv. JANE KERR was born in 1811 in Virginia. She died on 17
Jan 1891 in Morgan, Decatur, Iowa. She married JAMES COMER on 10 Nov 1837
in Raccoon, Gallia, Ohio. He was born in 1811 in Virginia. He died in 1860.
v. NANCY G KERR was born in 1820 in Virginia. She died
after 17 Jan 1891 in Morgan, Decatur, Iowa. Never married.
vi. ELIZA C KERR was born in Feb 1829 in Virginia. She died after
1900 in Hancock, Ohio. She married LENNELL H BURTON. He was born in 1819 in
Virginia. He died on 01 Nov 1897 in Gallia, Ohio.
Dabney served in the War of 1812. His war bounty land patent documents
state “Private substitute for George Hughes, Captain Helen's Company and
substitute for Caleb Green in Captain Allen's Company Virginia Militia War
of 1812”. Dabney Kerr is on the muster rolls For 1 Reg’t (Trueheart’s)
Virginia Militia and 4 Regiment Virginia Militia. I haven’t been able to
find information on either company from the land patent. In 1810 I find
Caleb Greens in Stafford and Cumberland counties and George Hughes in
Bedford, Caroline, and York counties. There is a Dabney Kerr married to
Eliza A Dodson residing in Cumberland county in 1810 – I don’t have any
proof that he’s my Dabney, though.
I do not have information identifying which county in Virginia my Kerr line
may have come from. Since they moved to Ohio around 1830, they may have had
older children that did not move with them. I have also considered that
Eliza A was Dabney’s 2nd (or 3rd) wife given the later birthdates of
daughters Nancy and Eliza.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jessica
