Margot van Voorhies Carr was an American who, in 1937, after the murder of her mother and
a divorce, left San Francisco and moved to Taxco, Mexico. (I have also seen her name as
Margot Carr Banburges). In 1938, she married one of the great maestros of Taxco silver
artistry, Antonio Castillo, and began working with him, creating some of his best designs
and becoming a renowned maestra in her own right. In 1948, they divorced and she opened
her own shop, called Margot de Taxco, where she designed magnificent pieces in sterling
and in her specialty, enamel on silver, numbered from 5100 to 5922, with designs that
featured Japanese, Art Deco, as well as traditional Mayan motifs. Unfortunately, she went
into bankruptcy in 1977 and many of her workers bought her molds; she died poor. There are
many excellent references about her. Most importantly for you is that she is the subject
of a 2011 book, "Margot Van Voorhies: The Art of Mexican Silver Enamelwork" by
Penny Chittim Morrill. !
Morrill is an art historian who teaches at George Mason University in Virginia and
lectures widely on Taxco silver. She's the author of at least 3 definitive works on
Taxco silver. She lives in Virginia and would probably have lots of information to share
with you. Good luck!
