Hi Sheri:
I definitely appreciate your response on this.
I very recently (less than a month ago) found a newspaper from Cherokee County in 1888
which stated that James Carr's wife had died at their new home near Hoisington,
Kansas. Once I found that, I then found James in the 1895 Kansas State census as well.
And there's a good chance that he's in the 1900 Federal Census, still in Barton
County, but as you've mentioned, if so, the parent's information got a little more
than slightly skewed.
Mary Elizabeth (Handley) Carr appears to be a few years older than her husband, James M.
Carr. She was my great grandfather's older sister, born in what is now Greenbrier
County, West Virginia about 1815 (or 1818, depending on what census record you're
depending upon).
Her father was William Handley, who died in Fountain County, Indiana in 1833. I'm not
sure who her mother was, which is one of the reasons I'm hoping to find her death
record, in hopes that her parents might be listed there. William Handley's son, with
wife Nancy (Mathias) Handley, was James William Handley (known also as William Handley
familiarly) who died in Vermilion County, Illinois in 1894, is/was my mother's
grandfather.
As you follow James and Mary Carr through the census records (including Iowa state census
records from near Iowa City, which seems to have been their initial settling in Iowa
before moving on to Cherokee County), it appears that they had 2 daughters, Dorothy
"Dollie" and Lucy W. Carr, neither of whom I've been able to find marriage
(or further census records) for. There's a very real possibility that both of them
might have been adopted, or possibly nieces of James, as both showed birthdates (according
to census records) as being born well after Mary was 40 years of age.
I hadn't seen the Marlin Bryant information yet. That should be of help to me.
Thanks! It's extremely interesting that his tombstone report also gives an 1815
birthdate for her.
Again, I tremendously appreciate the effort you've put into this! Thanks so much!
Joe
