The paternal line test is YDNA, you would have to find a male descendant of this John Carr
to take this test. The maternal line test is on mitochondria DNA. If you know a living
daughter of a daughter (and so forth to the present generation) of Fanny Sells, you (a
female) could do an mtDNA test to verify that line's mtDNA haplotype and test others
to see if they have the same hoplotype, which would occur if they descend along the
maternal line. Men carry their mother's mtDNA, but do not pass it on to their
children. You (male or female) could also do an autosomal test, an atDNA test is not as
definitive, positive means maybe you are recent cousins within 5 to seven generations,
negative means don't know. Testing multiple family members and cousins has a better
chance of identifying cousins since more combinations of the atDNA from each family line
will be identified through each family member or cousin tested, but gets a little
expensive. Unfortunately, there is no DN!
A test a woman can take that can positively identify if a person descends from her
father's paternal line.
