Message Board Post:
Hello: I am researching the lives and times of five women who, during the summer of 1889,
were appointed as the first female factory and tenement inspectors for the Department of
Health/city of Chicago. One of the five was Dr. Rachel Hickey Carr who only remained in
the position for about six months.
I am hoping the family papers at Yale may contain some info or references relative to her
brief 1889 service as factory and tenement inspector? and if so, by chance, another female
inspector, Marie Owens, is mentioned at all?
Marie Owens, nee: Connelly, went on to become a Detective Sergeant on the Chicago Police
Department in 1891 and as such became the first woman police officer in the USA. Marie is
the focus of my research.
Thank you,
Rick Barrett, Clifton, VA.
