My grandfather was born in Liverpool in 1886. His name was George Watson Carr. I have
managed to trace him back, through his parents (John Latham Carr I and Emma White), his
grandparents (John Carr and Elizabeth Latham), his great grandparents (John Carr and Mary
Purvis). John and Mary lived in Spennymoor, Co Durham. John Latham Carr I was born in
Gateshead, Durham. I also found a contemporary of my grandfather's called John Watson
Carr, indicating a common ancestor (I am thinking he may have been a cousin of my
granfather's). He was born in Auckland, Co Durham (Spennymoor is in Auckland)in 1887.
My mother always maintained that we (who all came from Liverpool) had connections in
Spennymoor (where I now happen to live). There was a Vicar or two at Whitworth, Spennymoor
in the early 19th Century (Charles was born in 1812 and was living in the parsonage in
1851 - Charles was the Vicar), but I cannot find the connection between them and us, apart
from the fact that John Carr and Mary Purvis lived in Spennymoor with my grandfather's
father (their grandson) in about 1891 (census)
Now, the question is:
Where did the Watson come from? I have found a Mary Watson living as the head of a
household with no apparent husband (she was elderly by that time, so her husband may have
died, or she may not have ever been a Carr). The other members of the household were all
Carrs. I have not been able to trace Mary anywhere else.
Ruth
