Message Board Post:
Greetings;
I am the descendant of a former slave to the Carr family of Duplin County. His name was
Peter J. Carr, and he was born in December of 1827. He was my 3G Grandfather.
I have reason to believe that he was owned by the family of John Carr, also from Duplin
County (Northern Division; later became Faison, NC). He was born around 1795. He had a
son, also named John, who was born around 1835. I believe that either, or both of these
men (through inheritance), once owned Peter.
I was wondering if anyone related to this family might possibly have some old records
pertaining to the family's slaves, that could assist me in my search? I'm looking
for more information on Peter, especially who his parents were.
I've also found a cohabitation record for Peter, and his wife, Mary. They were married
legally in 1866, then being allowed to do so by law after the emancipation. The
cohabitation record shows that they had been living together for 18 years, placing them
together in 1848, with Peter being 21 and Mary being 15. Perhaps an 1848 slave marriage
may have been recorded in the family books as well?
I'd love any help that the Carr family of NC could give.
Thanks so much and have a great weekend,
Michael
