After you log into the GRO site there is a page that you would tick the box you
want--birth, marriage, or death. There is one very important detail--you must spell it
exactly as it is in the registry. If it does not include a middle name then don't put
it. If it is spelled differently now--don't put that they will say that the items do
not match. On the free BMD
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ use this site, there are glasses
next to the record--look at the record as sometimes there are mistakes made--and they can
be costly.
Anyway--where it says "is the General Register Office Index Known?" tick yes,
and put in the year. click submit
the next page are your personal details usually filled in somewhat if you registered.
The next page you put the register office index information-standard service options, full
certificate. don't put anything in about references or reference checking--too hard to
explain and they are disbanding that part soon anyway.
click submit. then I think you pay. after that go back to the reference and print
that--save it. In case the cert is lost or takes too long you have the order number you
will need to ask what happened. Takes about 3 weeks to the USA. On marriages you only
need put one of the names in. Do not put in occupation, father's name or anything
outside of the GRO index numbers/district. If say he was a coal miner and you put that
in--and on the cert he was a "labourer" they would not issue you the cert as
those things don't match. Same thing will spelling a name different than it
appears--it will not match. They do not give refunds if the cert is not the one you
wanted. That was what the reference checking was about and they charge more and give a
partial refund if it doesn not match.
Spennymoor is in the Auckland District for the most part. When you are on the BMD
page-click on the district and another page will come up--click on the blue
"Here" and it will tell you what towns were in the district and what years.
Even though the children may have had middle names they might not have been registered
with them. Unfortunately Carr is a quite common name.
I costs less to order directly from the GRO (a government agency) than other services that
tell you they can get one for you. It should cost no more than £7.00 or later 9.00 (about
$12.00-13.00 USD depending on the exchange rate). You can use a credit card or a debit
card I believe. Easiest way.
Once you find out her Sarah Ann's father's name we can be sure we have the right
family to help you look back. Certificates were started in 1837. Before that it is
parish records.
