I have seen that there was slave ownership during this time. I am a Carr of African American heritage and also rumored to have had some Native American heritage as well. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Most of my family come from Alabama. I have gotten back as far as 1885 with a Jim (James Carr) married to a Mary Gilbert b 10 JUL 1887. Jim's father's name was James Carr as well and he was married to an Elizabeth (no maiden name) b. abt 1864. I do not have any information on these Carrs and I assume that they were slaves owned by a Carr family and perhaps were sired by one of the owners.

I am also a descendant of Matthew Carr.....
Matthew Carr > Samuel Carr > Hugh Floyd Carr > Madison Floyd Carr > George Randolph Carr
I only have a few notes. No land grants. And these notes are "suspect" because I don't have Matthew alive on the second grant in 1821. These were provided by a cousin somewhere and I have never followed up on them. Sorry.
1798: Matthew received 200 acres on Flat Lick Creek in Lincoln Co KY in Grants South of Green River series, Bk 26, pg 232, surveyed 8/22/1798.
1821: Matthew receives 100 acres on Flat Lick Creek in Pulaski Co KY in Grants South of Green River series, Bk 26, pg 38, surveyed 10/9/1821.
I hope this helps!!
Don McFadden

Message Board Post:
Dear Julie,
I am also of this line. Samuel Kerr (Carr) born 1793, TN and Esther Johnson born abt. 1800 in KY. What I know of the Cherokee Blood is through family legend. Samuel and Esther had a son named Andrew Kerr born Jan 1826 in Whitley County, KY. In 1846 he married Elizbeth Hamblin. She was born 15 Feb 1828 in Whitley County, KY. (these two are my GGG Grandparents) It is believed that Elizabeth was of Cherokee blood. Her parents were Benjamin Hamblin, Jr. and Judy Sears who were married in Whitley County, KY in 1827. It is said that Benjamin Hamblin Jr.'s parents were Benjamin Hamblin, Sr. of North Carolina and Casey Stormsworth, a full blooded Cherokee.
The family story says that our Cherokee ancestors fled for the hills of Tennessee during the time of removal...1830's. They hid there and were not spoken of for fear of removal. I have also heard that many of these family memebers took the surname of Bennett.
I would not be surprised if there are more Kerr's that married into Cherokee blood lines. Perhaps Nancy Jane Earls was of Cherokee blood?
I have been researching the Cherokee link to my Bennett family which relates back to the Kerr's. If I find anything of proof I will post it.
If you are interested in any other information regardign these families please email me.

Thanks.
