County clerk discovers 99-year-old marriage license

Putnam County clerk Wayne Nabors holds up the 99-year-ols marriage license that he happened to come upon in the fourth-oldest marriage license log book in the clerk's office. Herald-Citizen Photo/Lindsay McReynolds
PUTNAM COUNTY -- The Putnam County Clerk's Office on Washington Avenue is home to a great number of various records, some dating back more than 100 years.
But just recently, Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors came across something highly unusual as he looked through an old marriage record book -- a 99-year-old marriage license.
The license was found in "Marriage Book 4," which is the fourth book of marriage records for Putnam County that exists today.
"Somebody probably stuck it in there in error," Nabors explained as how he came across the old document. "I don't know how it got in there."
Now, the clerk's office does keep records of all marriages as required by law in bound log books dating back to 1879, but the actual marriage licenses are usually destroyed after five years or so.
This marriage license announces the union of Oscar Helms and Miss Nadie Carr on April 17, 1909, who were married by Justice of the Peace J.B. Lafever, but it doesn't say how old the two were or anything else about them.
"If there's a grandchild or great-grandchild who wants it, I'd be glad to give it to them," Nabors said.
The document itself is a sight much different than the marriage licenses of today. It depicts wedding bells on the top of the page with a man and a woman in a wedding gown presumably getting married in front of a preacher.
Today's marriage licenses look much different, as anyone knows who has gotten a marriage license in the past few years. A much more standard form is in place of the marriage licenses of years ago sans the picture of the bride and groom and the wedding bells.
Anyone who knows more about the marriage license of Oscar Helms and Nadie Carr should call Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors at (931) 526-7106.

I am searching for information about the date / place of birth and place of death / burial for James Carr (ca 1755 - 1829). I have estimated his birth date and I found his death date listed in a book about officers of the Continental Army. His exact date of death was listed as 11 Mar 1829 but I have found no other death information supporting that 1829 date.
James Carr served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; his service was for New Hampshire. James Carr is listed as a 2nd lieutenant in 1775 and by 1782 he held the rank of major. James Carr was captured by the enemy at the Battle of Hubbardton in 1777 and was later reunited with American forces in a prisoner exchange.
I have found no information about the wife of James Carr and very little information about their children. I know of two persons whom resided in Bradford County, Pennsylvania that were reportedly direct descendants of the aforementioned James Carr.
1) Dorcas CARR; born ca 1796 in VT; married Frederick McClelland 1814 in Delaware Co., NY or Bradford Co., PA; died 1854 in Canton, Bradford Co., PA. A biographical sketch about her grandson (J.F. McClelland) states Dorcas was a "daughter of James Carr a native of New Hampshire and a major in the Revolution."
2) Horace Corydon Carr; born ca 1830 in PA; died ca 1865 while enroute home from Texas at the end of the Civil War. A biographical sketch about Horace Carr's son-in-law (George Bullock who married Harriet E. CARR) states "His wife's great-grandfather, Col. James Carr served as a Col. in the same [Revolutionary] war. Her grandfather, Isaac Carr served in the U.S. army in the war of 1812."
If the biographical sketch data is accurate, we can assume that James Carr had at least two children whose names are Isaac and Dorcas. Based on the 1850 census records of Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA, Isaac Carr was born ca 1786 in NY and Dorcas CARR McClelland was born ca 1796 in VT.
The 1850 census data for Dorcas CARR McClelland and Isaac CARR is listed below.
1850 census of Canton Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania (f250, p106 ) lists:
McCallan Fredrick 61 M 6000 Farmer NY
McCallan Dorcas 54 F VT
McCallan Edwin 26 F Farmer PA
McCallan Reuben 19 M Farmer PA
McCallan Sally 14 F PA
Hurlburt Dorcas 10 F PA
.and a few households away:
1850 Canton Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania (f254, p107) lists:
Carr Isaac 64 M Farmer NY
Carr Prudence 58 F VT
Green Maria 5 F
Carr Isaiah 31 M Farmer NY
Carr Anna 24 F NY
Some miscellaneous Carr notes:
1) A Bradford County history book states the father of Dorcas CARR McClelland is Moses Carr, but I believe that statement is incorrect. Moses Carr came to Bradford Co., Pennsylvania from New Jersey.
2)The 1810 census of Smithfield Twp., Lycoming Co., PA (later Smithfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA) lists:
Carr Dorkis 0 0 0 0 0 .1 1 0 1 0
- 1 Female under 10, age 0-9, born ca 1800/1810
- 1 Female 10 and up but under 16, age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800
- 1 Female 26 and up but under 45, age 26-44, born ca 1765/1784
I am searching for information about the date / place of birth and place of death / burial for James Carr (ca 1755 - 1829). Also, I would like to confirm his relationships to Dorcas CARR McClelland and Horace Corydon Carr.
Any help with James Carr and his descendants would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Newell

I just found this website. Pross Wesley Carr was my great grandfather on my Dad's side. They also had a son, William Kenneth Carr (my dad's father) who was married to Jessie Starling Carr (who divorced him and later married Pat Rhymes). W.K. then married Lee Spikes. My dad was Howard O'dell Carr Sr. He died in 2001. I have a family history book somewhere in storage (I moved not long ago).
