Extract from another list from a Newspaper in 1884, describing an Exhibit by
WEST CUMBERLAND IRON AND STEEL COMPANY of WORKINGTON Cumberland, England at
the Calcutta Exhibition in India. This company manufactured Rail for trains
to run on. Which Carr invented it? See item below it from a Google search:
"There are several samples of the raw ore, such as Spanish manganiferous,
Irish aluminous, and others, and samples of coke made from the company's own
coal, after being crushed in a Carr's disintegrator. It is a large firm,
employing 1,600 people, and raising 180,000 tons of coal annually, besides
manufacturing rails, plates, forgings, and castings to a very large extent."
Description of a patent mill for grinding or pulverising various materials
designed by Thomas Carr of Montpelier, Bristol. The machine consisted of
four strong cylindrical iron cages...arranged concentrically one within
another, around, and parallel with the shafts...and rotated therewith with
extreme rapidity in contrary directions. The machine could be ordered in
various sizes. Carr first patented the device some time during the 1850s and
received various awards at the international exhibitions in London, Dublin
and Paris during the 1860s. The present item describes the new and improved
version, much larger than the original design, and includes comprehensive
instructions to purchasers, for instance advising that the machine should be
driven by a high pressure rather than a condensing engine, and recommending
how it should cased, lubricated, fed and cleaned. It was made in several
sizes and had a wide variety of uses including the making of coke and patent
fuel; brick-making; the granulation of ores before smelting; bruising
olives, grapes and apples and so on.It seems to have been successful for
there is a long list of purchasers such as B.C.Lawton of Newcastle-on-Tyne
(clay for bricks), Forest of Dean Compressed Coal Co. (small coal), Dillwyn
& Co., Llansamlet Spelter Works, Swansea (zinc ore) etc. Carr also had an
active foreign business, with purchasers from as far afield as the USA,
India and Australia as well as all over Europe.

I am researching the Carr family as well. My great, great, grand-parents names were Harriett (not sure of her maiden name) and George Carr from Rocky Point, NC (Pender County). I know that it was typical for family members to name children after other members of the family. Do you know if your grandparents family originated in that area, or do you have any other info that we could compare.
thanks.

Searching for fellow descendants of Zephaniah Mason CARR.
Z.M. CARR is a native of Washington County, N.Y., where he was born April 6, 1822. His father, Daniel Carr, a native of Rhode Island, moved to St. Joseph County, Mich., with his family in 1835, and two years later came to Pretty Prairie, this county, thence to English Prairie, then to Steuben County in 1843, where he died in 1844, leaving a wife - Martha (Mason) Carr - and seven children, the subject being the oldest son living. He assisted in caring for the family until twenty- eight years old; then with $240 came and purchased 50 acres of land in this township, making the rest of the payments ($160 in all) on time. His farm is now enlarged to 145 acres, and is well improved. In 1851, Mr. Carr and Miss Angeline Golden, who was born in Seneca County, N.Y., August 6, 1828, were united in marriage. Her father was Nathaniel Golden, a native of Nova Scotia, and her mother, Elizabeth (Tuttle) Golden, of New York; in 1836, they came with family to Steuben County, where their death!
s occurred. Mrs. Carr died in 1872, January 15, leaving her husband and five children to mourn her loss; they are James B., Ella, Jarvis, Frank and Nellie. Mr. Carr is an enterprising Republican.
