Hello to everyone, yesterday I received “The Border Line” Newsletter of the Kerrs and Carrs published by the Kerr Family Association of North America.
I thought this might be of interest..
“Border Heritage Ltd. In Scotland, with help from Border TV, has produced videotapes of the Border families and such may now be purchased from dealers of Scottish products in North America. There is one tape entitles “The Kerrs” and it has strong appeal to readers of this publication. The tape runs for about 50 minutes and it has comments from important sources on the history of the Kerrs/Carrs in the Borders with much supporting material on the raiding and fighting in early periods, Border songs, Scottish genealogy, and the main castles of the Kerrs.
This is a quality product featuring excellent color photography and many subjects that will interest Kerrs and Carrs. There are numerous still photos of Lord Lothian, the Earl of Ancram and local authorities, including Mrs. Hazel Wager, curator of Ferniehirst Castle. Fiona Armstrong, television personality with Border TV, conducts the various parts of the presentation. There are many views of Ferniehirst Castle, Floors Castle and Monteviot House, but viewers must be quick to catch the remains of old Cessford Castle.
The tape credits the Kerrs with being one of the oldest and most powerful families in the Borders, with great roots in the region. Shown in the tape are many portraits of early Kerrs of the Lothian line and Kers of the Cessford line.
The tapes sell for under $30, and should now be available at dealer tents at the major Scottish games and gatherings, as well as advertised for mail order purchase in the leading Scottish publications in North America. It is recommended as a reasonable and delightful product that will provide much enjoyment and pertinent information to Kerrs and Carrs. –JTK”
Typed as written in newsletter.

SELDENS OF VIRGINIA AND ALLIED FAMILIES BY MARY SELDEN KENNEDY VOLUME II
FRANK ALLABEN GENEALOGICAL COMPANY THREE WEST FORTY - SECOND STREET. NEW
YORK 1911
Page 237
The Westmoreland County branch of the Lane family begins its authentic
history with William Lane and his brother, James de Moville Lane, who
married two sisters, namely, Martha and Polly Carr.
The following is contributed by Mrs. Nellie McDonald Lyne, of Henderson,
Kentucky: "I am sure my greatgrandfather was William Lane, maybe a son of
James de Moville Lane. I know that James de Moville Lane was one of my
ancestors. You ask about William Lane, a Revolutionary soldier. I think he
was my grandmother, Anne Linton Lane's father. I have just found in my
mother's desk [her mother was Cornelia (Peake)
Page 237
McDonald, See Number Descendants of James de Moville Lane] a lot of old
papers of this. He was in the Georgia service during the war, so these
papers say, and the papers were receipts for money paid by him for expenses
for raising and recruiting troops. The papers are dated 1777 and 1776. I
will copy one of them for you. "'Loudoun Co. November 1776 Rec. of Capt.
William Lane six hundred & fifty Continental Dollars for the use of the
Second Georgia Battalion. William C. Smith.' 'Also 210 * * * for John
Walker in exchange for 43 of James River Bank.'" JAMES DE MOVILLE1 LANE
married Mary (Polly), daughter of William and Sarah Carr, and the sister of
Martha Carr who married his brother, William Lane (see account of his
descendants given later). Children:
i Harrison.
1 ii Benedict, married (???) Adams.
iii Sarah.
2 iv Anne Linton, married Dr. Humphrey Peake.
v Ralph.
vi Adelia.
vii Virginia.
WILLIAM1 LANE of Westmoreland County, Virginia, married Martha, daughter of
William Carr. The homestead of the Carr family was called "Carrsville."
William Carr's will, dated January 13, 1702-3, shows that he had a large
family consisting of one son, Joseph Carr, and seven daughters, to wit:
Sarah, named after his wife; Elizabeth; Hannah; Martha; Anne; Mary; and
Jane, all unmarried at the time of the making of the will. He makes Daniel
McCarty and George Eskridge his executors. By the will of Mrs. Sarah Carr,
widow of William Carr, dated November 1, 1726 (recorded in Deed Book 81,
page 239), all her estate is left to two of her daughters, Elizabeth Bailey
(probably the wife of William Bailey), and Anne Carr, spinster. There is
nothing in this will to show who were the parents of Mrs. Sarah Carr.
William Carr is the first of the name in the Westmoreland records. Martha
(Carr) Lane, as a widow, deeded property willed her by her father, to her
son, Joseph in 1763 (Deed Book 14, page 207). Nothing is known of the
parents of William Lane. A deed of 1714 (Deed Book 5, page 32), from one
James Lane of Cople Parish and Anne, his wife, who was the daughter and
sole heiress of Samuel Baker, to one James Erwine, conveying one thousand
acres of land, is the only official record in the County regarding the
name, prior to the will of William Lane, a copy of which is given below.
William Lane died in Westmoreland County in 1760.
In the name of God Amen the nineteenth day of August in the year of Our
Lord God one thousand seven hundred and fifty-eight. I William Lane of

I'm looking for information on the parents of Eva Jane and Will Carr.
Eva Jane Carr (B: March 10, 1877 in Oledo, Illinois; D: June 1, 1965 in Hospital, Marysville, Kansas) married: Edward Retchless. Eva Jane and Edward had two children: Howard L. Retchless and Kenneth E. Retchless. Both Eva and Edward are buried in Liberty Cemetary, Gage Co., Nebraska)
Not sure why Eva was in Kansas at the time of her death, possibly visiting relatives?
According to Eva's obituary her brother, Will Carr, was living in Lincoln, Nebraska at the time of her death. I don't have any other information on Will at this time.
Any help in locating the parents of Eva Jane Carr and Will Carr would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lee Stone
I promised to check out the CARR surname for a relative, but before I list names and dates I just wanted to know if there is anyone on the list who is familiar with the surname CARR in the Union County, PA. area.

This William Carr and his wife Jane are the ones I am
reseaching right now. If my guesses that I am trying
to tye down are correct, they are the parents of my
Samuel Carr That moved to Mississippi. William Carr
and Jane Sharp were married in N. C (Mecklenburg
Maybe) had several children (including my Samuel) and
then moved with many of her relatives to Montgomery
county Alabama. Did you see the land records? Could
Short have been Sharp? There are Several Sharps
living nearby that match the names of her brothers.
As you know, this far back the digging is tough!

Partial list of early land transactions in Montgomery, AL found at:

Not sure if the John Carr (half breed) is the same John "Jack" Carr that is referred to in postings here as being in Lauderdale Co. later on.
Me ... I'm looking for parents (and siblings) of Elijah Mount Kerr b. Christmas Day 1819 ... d. Louisville, KY 1891
Married Martha Ann CLOPTON in Montgomery, AL in 1849
Martha Ann Clopton was the daughter of James B. Clopton and Mary T. "Polly" Reese (she was the daughter of Joel Reese and Rebekah Harris)
My great grandfather, John Newton COWAN, had a plantation at Pleasant Hill (Lowndes Co.), AL ... he married Elijah Kerr's daughter, Laura Blanche Kerr.
There is an Elijah Kerr in BOTH Montgomery and Benton/Calhoun Counties in early AL ... don't know which one, if either, he relates to ... or which might be his father. (Don't know if they are one and the same person?) My Elijah is always shown as "Elijah M. Kerr" on legal documents and the census, perhaps to distinguish him from either/both Elijah Kerr and/or Elijah Carr of the same time period??
The Benton/Calhoun Co. KERR/CARRs seems to come from SC ... the bulk of the Montgomery KERR/CARRs seem to come from NC. Then, there's my Elijah born in PA ... where does he fit in?
One of these lines is very interesting in the number of children with Biblical names (including the females) ... another branch does not follow that naming convention. With a name like Elijah, I'm betting I'm related to the Biblical naming convention??? I've even theorized that daddy was a preacher man? (My Elijah was Methodist Episcopalian ... but there is a whole family of KERRs who were Presbyterian ministers. Found reference to one who started out as a Presbyterian and became an Episcopalian ... another became a Baptist.)

I'm trying to locate the Carr family who lived on Kingston Hill, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, in the early 1970's. In particular Lloyd Carr who was a friend of mine and with whom I would like to make contact and catch up with. If anyone knows the Carr family, Lloyd, or where they moved to, I would appreciate any help you can offer. With many thanks.

Lauren: I have a granddaughter named Lauren and a daughter named Lauri--must be a Carr thing! So good to hear from you again. My genealogy and emails are a nice distraction to having a chronically ill husband at home.
Yes, I have Nancy Alice Cannon as the wife of Richard Randolph Carr. Don't know why I didn't give the full name to you initally. Thanks for your offer of a list of his children. I have a list of children but am lacking other info about those children. Whom did they marry? Who were their children? On James Wiley Carr, I only have that he was born 1865, d. 1936, buried in Wadley, Ga. Have no wife or children in my info. Also on Sarah Jane Carr, have birth and death year, but not name of husband.
I remember some of the children of Richard Randolph Carr. Aunt Eula who marr. Joseph Gomila (Spanish descent), Uncle Gordon and his 2nd wife, Gladys Redmond, Aunt Esther and family, Uncle Kermit and family. Do you know the story of Lester Carr's death( son of Richard Randolph)? If you want more stories of this generation of relatives, I will share. By the way, Theobelle & Lucille, dtrs of Bessie Carr Woodcock and William Henry Woodcock, said that had looked many times for the grave site of Thomas Aaron Carr in Wadley, Ga. but could not find it. I wrote the State of Ga. for his death cert. and they could not find it. I look forward to hearing from you again, Billie Carr Bocetti

I came across this particular information just today.
The Kerr, Carr, Corr name is a Scottish Clan name. The original spelling was Kjrr. They were vikings and came during the Viking invasions of the 800's & 900's.
Most of them were from Norway. Around 1200 AD the official records in Scotland lists tham as spelling their name as Kerr and Carr. These vikings invades England, Scotland and Ireland. That is how they came to those countries.
The clan chief of the Kerr/Carr clan has a castle in East Lothian near the English Border. The clan received their lands and castles from King Edward I. They fought for him and he rewarded them with land, titles and castles.
