Bill Lyon , Philadelphia Inquirer, 2 Nov 2000
So there they sat, the nine of them in a wooden boat, bobbing about in the choppy waters of the River Seine, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, waiting for the start. Eight sturdy Philadelphians and a coxswain, come to Paris to represent America and the Vesper Boat Club, in the 1900 Olympics.
A fierce head wind raged at them, but they dug grimly in and after a dozen strokes opened a lead they would never yield. They covered 1 mile and 153 yards (1,750 meters) in 6 minutes, 7 4/5 seconds, six full seconds ahead of runner-up Belgium.
The crew of eight: John Exley, Henry de Baecke, James Juvenal, John Geiger, William Carr, Ed Hedley, Edward Marsh and Roscoe Lockwood. The cox: Louis Abell. The coach: Pat Dempsey, who took no salary. Rowing, in the minds of its devotees, is its own reward.
A full century later, descendants of the Vesper Olympic champions are gathering tonight, 72 of them, at the newly restored club on gleaming Boathouse Row. Great-grandchildren and great-nephews are coming, bringing with them mementos - a medal, statuary, even one of the original oars.
It is being billed as a history flashback. Not many reunions link 100 years

I am almost positive they are part of the Carr family of Pennsylvania and then of Muhlenberg / Christian Co KY ... too many similarities not to be. Several George Carrs in the family who stayed behind, so the name exists in the family. I just have to find where they got to.

Hello, and yes, there are a lot of George Carrs! "Our" George wasn't born until 1875, it was his parents listed in the 1850 IN census. George is listed in the 1880 census as a five year old with his parents. I wonder if there is a connection as cousins somewhere...I am also having a hard time finding data, and there may be a Cherokee connection (I know, everyone says this) but there are clues. Hope you find your family! Dorothy

Unfortunately, I lose track of George and Nancy Wells Carr after the 1840 census. There are an enormous number of heads of family named George Carr in the 1850 census but I don't recall seeing one in Grant Co. Where is Grant Co anyway? Certainly the estimated DOB of app 1832 or 1833 would fit for this family, and the names of the girls fit in well with the simple Biblical names preferred by these folk.
But thank you for the information....perhaps I can build on it.
I am searching for more information on James Carr (middle name possibly
King) who was born about 1739 and died 1782 in Virginia, and his wife Hannah
Hobbs-Oglesby who was born about 1739. She probably died in Sumner Co., TN.
I have the following children for them:
1) King Carr, born January 1769 in South Carolina and died March or April
1833 in Sumner Co., TN. He was married to A) Anna Hamilton and B) Elizabeth
"Betsy" Beard.
2) John "Uncle Jackie" Carr, born September 5, 1773 in South Carolina and
died December 31, 1858 in Sumner Co., TN. He married Sarah "Sally" Cage,
daughter of William Cage and Elizabeth Douglass. Sally was born June 29,
1774 and died August 23, 1841. Both are buried at Bethpage Cemetery in
Sumner Co. It was in a write-up about him that I found the death year for
his father.
3) William "Willy" Carr, born January 29, 1776 in Houston's Fort, Virginia,
and died December 12, 1856 in Cannon Co., TN. He married Elizabeth Dobbins
December 1, 1796 in Sumner Co.; she was the daughter of Alexander Dobbins
and Mary Carson, and was born November 2, 1778; died November 21, 1838.
Willy and Elizabeth are my 3rd great grandparents in my Carr line.
I know that Hannah had children by her first marriage, and that she and
James had other children also. In some of my research, I have read that a
grown married son was the one who started the family in the direction of the
Cumberland region where they eventually settled; of course, this was after
James had died. Does anyone know the names of any of the other children?
Does anyone know where Willy and Elizabeth are buried?
Also, does anyone know who the parents of Andrew M. Carr who was born
January 18, 1796 in Virginia are? He married Charity Williamson Allen
November 30, 1820 in Sumner Co. I wonder if he is the son of King Carr and
his first wife Anna Hamilton.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Judy Richard
