Carrs of Holly Grove (Coal Pite), Killeroran, Roscommon, Ireland
On September 28, 1982 Fred and I drove to Roscommon in search of Catherine Carr’s birthplace. We asked the postmaster for directions to Holly Grove or Coal Pits. Before leaving the U.S., I spoke to Joe Kennedy, Catherine Carr’s son, who suggested that we speak to Postmaster Flannigan in Roscommon. Unfortunately he had been transferred to another office. In Athleague, the closest town of any size to Coal Pits, we asked the first elderly man we saw if he had ever met Thomas Carr. He said if it is the Thomas Carr who married Mary Kelly then he had. That was our lucky day!! He directed us to the Holly Grove/Coal Pits area. We stopped in front of a two story granite house and asked a middle aged man if he knew whether this was the former residence of Thomas and Mary Carr. As luck would have it once again he said that it was not, but that he owned the old Thomas Carr estate. His name was Mr. McCann and he said that the property had been divided and the Rourkes had !
built a house on a portion of the original property. He stated further that the house was in bad condition because no one was living in it and that cows had roamed through it. He also said that the house was hard to spot because it was very far back from the road. Mr. McCann also said that his mother would love to talk with us but unfortunately we could not find her house. We drove back and forth several times and finally saw an elderly woman who had known Tom and Mary. She said that they frequently cycled into Athleague. The neighbor also said that Mary loved children and often gave them sweets. We turned the car around and spotted the house high on the hill.. It is hard to say how much property was originally with the house. It might be as little as twenty acres or more than one hundred. It would have been an interesting question to ask Mr. McCann. At the entrance to the property there were two stone posts. We walked approximately 600 feet straight ahead and then turned to!
the left and continued up a slight grade approximately 200 feet. It was a stone house with a door framed in an interlacing pattern of diamonds and ovals. There were quoins on the two front corners of the house. The front door was boarded up so we climbed through a back window into the kitchen which still had only a mud floor. At the front entry hall there was a staircase straight ahead and a hallway to the left of the staircase leading to the kitchen. There were two large rooms, one on each side of the entry hall both with interesting fireplaces. A stairway with nicely carved banisters, still intact, led to the second floor. The second floor like the first consisted of two large rooms, both with a fireplace. To the left of the house was a stone shed. There was also a spring on the property and someone said that many years ago it was used as a community spring. It was a great thrill to see the house where my grandmother was born and grew up. If only the cows had not roamed t!
hrough it and destroyed the floors it would still be a picturesque house on a hill. After dinner that evening we went to a general store in Athleague and mentioned that my grandmother, Catherine Carr, was born in Coal Pits. They said that Mary Kelly’s sister, Mrs. Haughey, was still alive and lived in Athleague right next to the church. We also learned that there were Carrs in neighboring Fuerty Parish. We went to see Mrs. Haughey the next day and her son came to the door and said that his mother was very low. He asked if we could come back later. Unfortunately our schedule was tight and we reluctantly headed for Donegal.

If you read down in this article you will find a note about Rivett's great grandfather - Christmas Rivett was married to
Rachel Ann Carr who was born in Ogdensburg, NY. I am wondering if perhaps the note really meant Rivett's great grandfather -in-law.....can you shed any light or your thoughts on the subject - please e-mail me privately at djnicol(a)attglobal.net Thanks.......Ciao.....Darlene.
The article was Titled " Jubilee Series No. 24" - The following is printed in an old newspaper clipping (no date) with a picture of Elias J.S. Rivett, resident of Radisson, Sask. Writing of his earlier days, Mr. Rivett, who will be an honoured guest of the Saskatoon exhibition in July, says:
" I was living in Ottawa at the time of the North West Rebellion, when Louis Riel and a few discontented Indians caused the only break in Canada's peace since Confederation, little thinking at that time that I was to make my home within a few miles of where the rebellion broke out.”
" I have listened to Sir John A. MacDonald as he led his party in the House, and was with the vast throng which turned out to pay our respects to the grand old chieftain as he was born to his last resting place.
" I also witnessed the great fire of 1900 in Ottawa and Hull, when hundreds were rendered homeless and millions of dollars went up in smoke. But Ottawa survived and out of the ashes came a greater and more beautiful city."
" In the same way will Canada, with peace and goodwill to all, develop her great natural resources and become on the leading nations of the world."
Elias James Simpson Rivett is my maternal grandfather - he was born in Almonte, Ontario - July 22,1867 and died in Vancouver, BC on the 23rd of September, 1938 at age 71.
Mr. Rivett's great grandfather, who served as a colonel in the United States Border Rifles, was captured with some others by a band of Indians and would have been tortured, had the chief's daughter not taken him for her slave. He was held captive for several years but finally escaped during a terrific thunderstorm. Shortly after reaching home he died as a result of the hardships he had undergone.
I remember feeling very sad when my maternal Grandma (Mrs. E.J.S. Rivett nee McInnis) told me this story because he apparently didn't live very long after finally reaching home.
Re: Mr. Rivett’s father - Christmas Rivett - someone in the family has a obit for Christmas Rivett stating he is buried in the eighth line cemetery near North Gower (Perth/Amonte) area. His wife was Rachel Ann Carr b: in 1825 (according to the 1901 Canadian census) and emigrated to Canada from the US in 1833. Christmas (also re: the 1901 census) emigrated to Canada from England in 1837. Rachel Ann d: Sunday, Dec.7.1902 in Almonte, Ontario and is buried in the 8th Ave. cemetery. Could the eighth line and the 8th Ave. cemeteries been the same place?

There is about 100 years between the James Carr you are searching for and the James Carr I am searching for. The James Carr I am trying to locate was reported to have lived to the age of 105. It was believed that he had a large family and he came from Ireland. At one time he worked in the coal mines in the late 1700's. Here is my information:
I am looking for information on James CARR from Fayette Co., PA He may have had a daughter, Rachel that married William J. Meeks.
I have determined that my GGG-GF is William J. Meeks, Sr., he was born on March 2, 1800, in Fairfield County, Ohio and died on 9/8/1875 in Fulton County, Ohio. I am trying to determine and prove his father.
He was married to Rachel Carr in 1819, Rachel was born on 12/17/1798 in Fayette County, PA and she died on 8/15/1884 in Fulton County, Ohio.
William J. Meeks' father was most likely Joshua Meeks, who died in Fairfield County, Ohio in 1801.
Joshua Meeks is listed in the History of Fairfield County, Ohio with: Ralph and Ann Cherry, when they arrive in Fairfield County, Ohio in 1799 and tells of his death in 1801.

Has anyone done research on George Carr born in New Jersey 28 Oct 1746?
All I can find on him are a few census records and his Rev War pension records. These all are before 1840 with no family members listed in either.
Enlisted in the VA militia in Wythe Co., VA in 1774.
Removed to TN near Jonesboro in 1778.
Died in Morgan Co., MO about 1833 (Pension sent to "widow" who is not named)
Certain he is my 4th G Grandfather, but would like to know him better!
