Thanks for writing. I received the information below from an email back in
1997 from an AOL member. ecarter is no longer an AOL member, I'm afraid.
Sounds like you're on to something. There is certainly room for a child to
have been born in 1875 when the couple married in 1874 and the first child in
my records was born in 1876. One thought on the Nancy Ann / Mary Ann
situation: Nancy is a nickname for Ann, or vice versa, so maybe the record
was meant to read Nancy "Ann" or "Nancy" Ann. Maybe she was Mary Ann and her
nickname was "Nancy" or something to that effect?
I maintain a Carr database at Rootsweb. I'm not related to this particular
line of Carrs, best that I can tell. I'm incorporating your latest info into
the database and would appreciate continued updates on your Carr line for the
record.
I'll copy this email to CARR_L at Rootsweb, in case anyone knows the latest
email address for ecarter or has further info on this line of W VA Carrs.
See bottom for link to my Rootsweb site. See below for text of 1997 email.

MARIE O'NEILL CARR - Newport, Rhode Island
MARIE O'NEILL CARR, 101, a resident of the St. Clare Home, a former explosives worker, lighthouse keeper and school-lunch worker, died yesterday at the home. She was the wife of the late Earl E. Carr. Born in Newport on
July 9, 1900, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Catherine (Canole) O'Neill.
During World War I and World War II, Mrs. Carr had worked in the explosives department at the former Newport Torpedo Station, on Goat Island. With her husband, she spent 20 years as a lighthouse keeper, living at the Little Gull Light in Long Island Sound and the Southeast Lighthouse on Block
Island. In later years, she worked for the school lunch program at Middletown High School.
Mrs. Carr was a parishioner of St. Mary Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Newport.
She leaves a son, Richard J. Carr of Portsmouth; a daughter, Ruth M. Gos of Middletown; a granddaughter, Barbara Holloway of Middletown; and two great-grandchildren. She was a grandmother of the late Carol Gros Carlen,
and the sister of the late Edward, William, Harold, John, Robert, Marjorie and Eveline O'Neill.
The funeral will be on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. from the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Mary Church, Spring Street. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.

"As the wife of a lighthouse keeper, Marie Carr was called on to perform tasks unthinkable today. The first post her husband, Earl, held was on Little Gull Island in Long Island Sound. They lived there with their two small children from 1923 to 1927. To get the groceries - or anything else -
Marie had first to row one and a half miles to the Fort Meike Army post on Big Gull and from there be taken by motor launch to New London. Little Gull, Marie reported, was 'a good place to go. We were never hungry. Lots of fish and lobster pots!' In 1927, the Carrs moved to the Block Island
Southeast light [RI], a step that enabled the children to attend school. Though at first Earl 'went down a peg' as assistant to head keeper Willett Clark, when Mr. Clark retired a few years later Earl was promoted. The Carrs lived here until 1943."
