Dear Carol et al.:
I don't know the parents of my wife's ancestor, Mary Elizabeth Downer, w/o
John Carr (1746-1809), son of Gideon. However, a friend once copied some
material from the Tennessee DAR Library that included the following:
"Downers were from Caroline Co., then Spotsylvania, Orange, and Albemarle."
Also mentioned in this paper is a book entitled Downers in America, by David
B. Downer of Newark, NJ.
I have not attempted to track the book down, nor conducted any research in
either Spotsylvania or Orange Counties. Have you looked for the marriage
bond in Albemarle?

Dear Carr Listers,
Has anyone on the Carr list come across the name Archibald Carr, born April 20, 1807, in Ohio?
According to the story Archibald was orphaned and then raised by "Uncle (?)" Peter Cusick of Washington and Belmont Counties, Ohio. Whether this was a blood relation or a friendly neighbor that took the boy in is not known. However Archibald thought enough of his benefactor that he named his first born son Peter Cusick Carr (my great grandfather).
Archibald married Elizabeth McElroy December 1, 1829, and in 1850 the family moved to Farmington, Van Buren Co., Iowa.
Archibald died February 6, 1865 and is buried at Farmington, IA.
Any information on Archibald would be greatly appreciated as this has been a major roadblock for a very long time.

My sister sent me the following note re Carrs who died of yellow fever in
Philadelphia in 1793. I know, she reads morbid books, but she's blood and I
gotta love her. (I asked her for clarification of the Rob't entry.)
Pat
>>I just got out a book through interlibrary loan containing a
contemporary commentary on the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia
in 1793. At the back, it lists the names of those who died (a LOT OF
PEOPLE). There are several Carr's listed which you may or may not
have on one of your lists:
James Carr, Labourer, and wife
John Carr
Joseph Carr, joiner, and wife
Joseph Carr, apprentice
Rebecca Carr, and mother
Mary Carr
Rob't Carr, brass-founder's wife
Anyhow, these would all have death dates of 1793 (Aug-Dec).
The book is _A Short Account of the Malignant Fever, Lately Prevalent
in Philadelphia_ by Mathew Carey. It was originally published in Jan
1794, but has been reprinted in facsimile by Arno Press, New York in
1970.<<
