Surname: CARR, WEEDEN, CORY, HIGBEE
-------------------------
from "The Electric Spark"
A monthly chronicle of Jamestown Happenings
put out by the Dr. Bates Sanitarium, Jamestown, RI
Vol. XI, No. 12, December 1927
"Death of Thomas Giles Carr
Mr. Thomas Giles Carr, one of the oldest citizens of Jamestown, and whose
ancestors have been prominently connected with the affairs of the town
and state for many years, died at his home in that town Nov. 23d. He was
in his 85th year and had been in failing health several months.
Mr. Carr was born January 16, 1843, in Jamestown, a son of Peleg Cross
and Catherine Watson (Weeden) Carr, and had spent the larger part of his
life in the town. He was a descendant of Caleb Carr, one of two brothers
who came
from England and settled in Newport, and was governor of the colony in
1695, holding that position at his death. Caleb Carr was granted land for
the first ferry operated between Jamestown and Newport and the mainland,
and it
was he for whom the new ferry-boat Governor Carr was named. Descendants
of Caleb Carr have held prominent places in public life through the poast
two centuries.
Thomas Giles Carr was educated in the town schools and at East Greenwich
Academy. Returning to his home from the latter institution he remained
with his father until the early seventies, when he went to South Carolina
and located near Charleston, being engaged for two years in the growing
of cotton. Returning to Jamestown, he located on the Knowles property,
where he farmed a tract of 70 acres until his death, being specially interesting
in sheep raising.
He was active in public life, being a tax assessor 20 years, a member of
the town council and school committee, and for 10 years surperintendent
of public schools. Elected a member of the State house of representatives
in
1869, he served two terms. In 1872 he was elected to the senate and served
in that body two years. In 1895 he was again elected to the house and,
in 1902 was once more sent to the senate. He was a charter member of Conanicut
Grange, and had held various offices in that organization.
In 1883 he married Lucy J. Cory, daughter of Captain Andrew Cory, who died
several years ago. He is survived by two sons, Mr. George C. Carr of Jamestown
and Mr. Nicholas Carr of Providence, and two daughters, Miss Maria A. Carr
of Jamestown and Mrs. Edward W. Higbee, Jr. of Hasbrook Heights, New Jersey."

HULL, ARMBRUST, BROOKS
-------------------------
from "The Electric Spark", Vol. 7, No. 2, Feb. 1, 1915:
Jamestown, Rhode Island
"Sudden Death of Mrs. Lucy Cory Carr, a Life-Long Resident
Mrs. Lucy Cory Carr, wife of Thomas G. Carr, died suddenly Monday afternoon,
January 11th. She had been a life long resident of the island and was an
acquaintance and friend of practically everyone. Up to the latter part
of that week she had been in her usual good health.
Thursday an abcess forming in one ear caused much pain, but as it apparently
broke outwardly, Sunday, if was not considered dangerous. Her condition
Monday, however, became such that she was hurriedly taken from her home
to the surgical ward at Dr. Bates Sanitarium. A consultation was held,
but nothing could be done and she sank rapidly until the end, which came
at 4 o'clock. The cause of death ws given as the breaking of the abscess
internally; which effected the brain.
Previous to its purchase by Dr. Bates for a Sanitarium, the property was
the homestead of the Cory family and Mrs. Carr died in the house which
had been her girlhood home.
She was the daughter of Captain Andrew J. and Lucy Maria Cory, and besides
her husband, a former senator of this town, she leaves three sisters -
Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, who is at present in Florida; Mrs. Lionel H. Champlin
of Bay Ridge, N.J., and Mrs. George T. Barnes of Newburgh, N.Y. She leaves
also four children -- Mr. Nicholas E. Carr and Miss Maria Carr of Providence,
Mr. George C. Carr, treasurer of the Jamestown and Newport Ferry Co., and
a former representative and Mrs. E. W. Higbee, Jr., of Woodhaven, Long
Island.
While Mrs. Carr's chief attachment was to her home, she was a member of
the Jamestown Historical Society and a member of long standing in Conancut
Grange.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from her late home on the Shore
road, Rev. Stanley Hughes of Trinity Church, Newport, officiating. The
bearers were George H. Carr, B. D. Higgins, George Howland, Ralph G. P.
Hull, Ferdinand Armbrust, and William H. Brooks. The burial was in the
family plot in the Cedar cemetery. The unusually large attendance from
out of town, together with the members of Conanicut Grange and Conanicut
Council Royal Arcanum, made an exceptionally large gathering."

I am in search of my grandfather's ancestors.
My grandfather, Jacob Sherman CARR b. 18 Apr 1868 Brown's Mill, Franklin
Co., PA; d. 5 Mar 1953 Waynesboro, Franklin Co., PA.
According to a distant cousin who still lives in Chambersburg, Franklin
Co., PA there was a Hugh CARR in the ancestry. They lived on Clay Hill
Road, Antrim Twsp, Franklin Co., PA. This is now a Greencastle, PA address.
I have found Hugh CARR 37, Sarah 35, James 9, Sarah 7, Elizabeth 5, Julian
2, William 2 months, Gearge CARR 34, Elizabeth McNelly 62 on the 1850
census for Antrim Twsp. Hugh, Sarah and their first 3 children were born in
Ireland, Julian and William born in PA. George CARR and Elizabeth McNelly
were also born in Ireland.
Might this be the same Hugh CARR that you have in your database? (born 1813)
According to Jacob's obit his parents were James and Annie CARR.
I found a James CARR buried in a cemetery in Brown's Mill.
Any ideas on this whole relationship?
Thanks for any input on this message.

I am looking for a relative that is related to John Lewis Thompson born
2-14-1875, married to Helen Kerr of Sherman born 1875 and married 6-21-1898.
There sons are John Lewis Thompson Jr. born 1902, and Benjaman T. Thompson
born 1903. This is related to an old bible that is here in Lufkin Texas and
found at a bible shop and we are looking for a relative. It has inscriptions
in it and is a very good and old bible. Please let me know if you have any
clue. Thank you Lesa Weeks

The information I have in my database comes from the World Family Tree,
which is managed by www. familytreemaker.com. There you can find out the
submitter for Tree #3548. The submitter seems to know the line from the Kerr
perspective.

I can post a note to the Carr list if you like. I've not had any
correspondence from folks researching this line, best I can tell. I'll wait
until you write back, though, because I don't know if you want me to do so
in this situation. I'll leave that up to you.

Could you please do that for me. This is a really old bible and someone
from the family needs to claim it. This is my only hope to find anyone. I
have searched everwhere and cant come up with anything. I have been on the
internet everynight and I finally came upon this and it was great. Thank
you so much for your help to find the member of the family that should own
this great BIBLE. Lesa
So, does anyone know this family and want to help get this bible back to its
descendants? Sounds like a worthy cause. Maybe it is one of you?

I am interested in getting more biographical information about John Price
Carr (b 5/14/1826 in Mercer County, OH d 1/12/1896 in White County, IN).
John Price Carr and Caroline Powell had a son (Oliver Scott Carr), but
there is no marriage record between John and Caroline. In fact, there is
a family story that Carolines grandfather John McKillip drove John Price
Carr out of Ohio at the point of a gun. Oliver was raised with his mothers
second family, the Highwoods. His father (John Price Carr) went on to be
an Indiana Legislator. There are said to be printed biographies of John
Price Carr, but I have never seen any. These biographies dont mention
his son Oliver Scott Carr, although John Price Carr did eventually recognize
Oliver as his son and paid him a visit in later years.
Here is the complete will of William Carr of Halifax Co. VA.
This family is shown by court documents to have been in the area of
Halifax since 1753. The earliest Carrs mentioned in Halifax Court
records are, Susannah, John, Robert, Thomas, Arthur, Isaac, and Thomas
and William (1753-1769). Some of the decendants of these Carrs migrated
to TN and MO. Known counties of migration to me are, Henry, Weakely,
and Obion Co TN and Stone Co MO. Still looking for the parents of this
William Carr, will 1835.

Just found this in a search...don't know who he is, but thought he might
"belong" to someone.
"William Carr Will - 1835
I William Carr of the County of Halifax being old and Infirm but of sound and
disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner
following that is to say: I direct that all my Just debts be paid by my
executor herein after named. I Give to my Grandson Thomas A Carr son of
Thomas Carr deceased the lower part of the tract of land on which I now live
including the mansion house to be laid off by a line commencing on the ridge
path leading to Hawkins old place fifty Yards above a small old field in
Tuckers line thence a straight line across the plantation and crossing
Bradley Creek to the corner between my land the land of John Carr and of
William Pringle...."
I know this is not the Wm. PRINGLE who came to Sumter, SC, but I saw him and
thought I would pass him along.
Sleep tight!

Got this off the Pringle list.

I hope we all learn from his efforts. After reading so many of these e-mails
that just blindly ask for a particular name combination with no other info,
it is good to see a letter pass through that offers a little insight into
what the researcher really faces. Having seen so many personal genealogies
where a record of a person was stolen, inappropriately misused or however one
wishes to describe it, I am glad to see something constructive pass through.
Perhaps there is a chance that well meaning honest individuals will take more
care if they are more enlightened by informed discussions.
