>From "A History of Caroline County", T. E Campbell, 1954
Campbell stated on page 59
"The Founding Fathers-Their Background, Duties and Problems"
Thomas Carr was appointed by Governor Gooch, as kings magistrates to set up
Caroline County." '....'
"Thomas Carr was even better qualified through training than Woodford, to be
magistrate. A long time resident of King William, he had served that county
as magistrate, sheriff and burgess. In <1727 he was an elderly man with a
seat at Topping Castle on the North Anna.> One of his daughters was married
to a Waller and another to a Minor. These Alliances gave him great influence
over the most substantial people in St. Margaret's Parish."
During the Rule of Sir William Gooch Thomas Carr Sr. is said to have
"profited most from this generosity. He already owned a large slice of St.
Margaret's Parish and a sizable acreage across the North Anna in Hanover when
the county was organized, Shortly thereafter he patented jointly with his
son-in-law, John Minor and William Waller, 6,000 acres on the South side of
the James in Piedmont, VA and 100,000 acres in his won name alone in
Goochland, Hanover, and Spotsylvania. His descendants which included the
Dabneys, Minors, Sizors and Wallers as well as Carrs, took up residence in
this territory."
This lends some insight as to Thomas Carr Sr. being elderly in 1727. Should
he be over 75 or older? Certainly he was born before 1780, if this is true.
He was also a man of the Aristocracy and well connected to Sir William Gooch
by this time.
Jim Carr
Yes, I would also like to see documentation if anyone has it
please respond.
Gideon Carr I have as born about 1711, Jan, 1, from the St. Peters log."son
of William Carr.
There is an account of the first home of Thomas Carr the Gentleman at his
home near Sweethall Va, plantation called Waterville This was near to the St.
Peters Parish area.
Thomas Carr, Gentleman is listed as an Elderly man in Caroline County around
1725 when he was a member of the house of Burgess.
Jim Carr
Dear Carr List:
Does anyone have any documentation that would give the age or birthdate
of either Thomas, William, or John Carr who appear in tidewater Virginia
in the late 1600s and early 1700s?
Since there are so many Carrs of the same name at about this time and
later, I refer to these individuals:
This Thomas is the one who entered his first Patent April 25, 1701
for 546 acres in St. Peter's Parish, King William Co. He rose to Burgess
for King William for many years. His son, variously Thomas Carr Jr. or
Major Thomas Carr, was a founding father of Caroline County and a
burgess there until his death.
The William Carr I refer to is probably the one who appeared as the
father of Gedion Carr, baptized 8 Feb 1689. St. Peter's Parish, King
William.
Early John Carr entries are elusive... a John Carr is shown among
those transported to New Kent County (1.) by Jno. Fleming, (Patent 20
April 1680), and (2.) George Morris, (Patent, 16 April 1683). A John
Carr is shown briefly as Minister of St. Peter's Parish (King William)
in 1684 and 1685. He apparently died shortly thereafter. An entry of 5
Oct 1687 shows a payment to "Mr. ffirth, on ye account of ye Exectr. of
Mr. Carr."
A John Carr appears as a processioner in St. Paul's Parish (New
Kent) in 1709. Then references are made over the years from 1711 to 1744
to "Mrs. Carr's orphans" (suggesting that this John Carr had died before
1711) until the name John Carr reapppears 28 March 1752 (possibly a son
of the earlier John Carr). Whatever relationship may be between these
John Carrs is unknown to me.
The kind of documentation I am seeking could be court testimony or some
other written record.
Example: the "Family Bible" record kept by John Carr, son of Thomas
Carr Jr., which states, "My father (John Carr's father) Thomas Carr,
departed this life 29th May, 1738, aged 59 years." (Quoted by G. C.
Broadhed in Wirginia Historical Magazine, v.3 p.208.)
Example: from an article in The Virginia Genealogist vol. 17 pp.
116-119, one Joseph Carr, the oldest son of a different William Carr of
Westmoreland County states: "In a legal proceeding concerning the death
of Christopher Woolcock, Joseph Carr, the son of William and Sarah Carr,
swore on 8 No. 1704 that he was 45 years old 'or thereabouts,' making
him born about 1659." (see Westmoreland Co. Deed and Wills, vol. 4, p.
10)

Sorry frank, I just want anyone with information or who is looking for
information
to know what we are talking about.
We do not know that Thomas Carr son of Gideon was not living in North
Carolina before coming to Wilson County. In a document giving power of
attorney over his affairs in Albemarle Thomas stated that he was moving to KY
that was in 1806. Maybe they were in other places before settling in Wilson
County.
It is known that Richardson Carr lived in Wilson and Sumner counties. Thomas
Carr and family held lands on both sides of the river around bledsoes Creek
area. There is a family of CARRs living in Sumner County and they are
related to John Carr whos family may be related to Thomas Carr, John Carr was
writer of "Early Times in Middle Tenn " relating the story of the settlement
in by the Bledsoes, Carr's, Seiviers and others in the 1780-1790s. They also
had a Wilson Carr which may seem odd.
Jim Carr
Jim,
I have CARR's in Franklin Co. NC up to the early 1800's
and they moved to Tennessee and Kentucky. What interests
me about your message here is that we've had a
Wilson CARR
in every generation up to my grandfather's generation.

The connection does look very promising. My Charles A. Coleman was born October 1, 1857 on Island 35, Tipton county. He married first Mary Jane Arnett August 10, 1878 and had one child, Warner Coleman born abt 1879. He married second Alma Melissa Stokes August 2, 1882 and had 7 children by her, one of which, Minnie L. Coleman was my grandmother. He married third Mrs. Coleman abt. 1919. He died November 27, 1919 while attending a conference in Memphis Tennessee. He was a circuit riding Methodist minister and preached all over western Tennessee and into southern Kentucky. His obit doesn't have much information in it. It says that he had 7 children and that he had was a third child.
The child "Thomas" listed in the 1880 census living with Warner and Massy is identified in that census as a grandchild. From the information in the 1870 census, he must be the son of R.W who must have died by this time.
I believe that Charles may have originally been named "Charlie" and just named himself Charles. I have often heard family talk of a Cherokee in the family, but had believed it came from another side of the family. A picture of my Mother looks VERY native American.
The father of Charles I have found various places as Warner Archer Coleman, Thomas W. Coleman, Thomas Warner Coleman and Walter Archer Coleman. I have found him born Near Hopewell, TN, Ireland, and in the 1880 census in Virginia. I believe him to have been born about 1828-1829, and died before 1900. However, Thomas W. Coleman is listed as dying October 31 1871.
Massey Lavinia Pennel born March 6, 1832, Drummons, Tipton, TN and died March 28, 1900 Ramsey, TN. Their marriage date Oct 31, 1849 Her parents were Samuel C. Pennel and Elizabeth Dupree. I believe that the Dupree connection is correct as my grandmothers sister, Viola Beatrice Coleman contributed funds to support research into the Dupree family history.
I have two pictures of Charles Coleman and will send them as an attachment if anyone is interested.
I am VERY interested in the James Coleman data and also anything you have on their ancestors.

Dear Frank,
Thank you for your response to James Calvin Coleman. We have been able to verify that it is the link to my Coleman line, per the 1880 Census which names J.Calvin, wife Susan and their 3 children. With that link, we know that James C. in the 1870 Census is the same; and he is the brother of (according to response from Bonnie Craver to your query) Charles A. Coleman. To further the tie, my mother remembers going to visit her great-great aunt,Nannie in the Tipton County area in the late 1930's.
What I know about the Coleman line comes from J.Calvin, who married Susan and had 10 children, one of which was my great grandmother, Birtie. This is where my most extensive information is.
I will be glad to share information about this line, if you are interested.

Richardson Carr married three times. First to Milly Sawyers 6 Oct 1809 then Jemimah Glenn 27 Jan 1827 then Joanna (Johanna) Dwyer 27 October 1834. I believe that Richardson and Jemimah are the parents of Nancy Carr and Elizabeth Carr and Richardson and Joanna are the parents of Eliza Jane Carr.
Can anyone add names and dates for birthdates for these or other children.
Frank A. Butler, descendant of Eliza Jane Carr

Hi All,
I'm looking for information on Lizzie Carr b. abt. 1873 possibly in KY.
She married William B. Self in Cumberland Co., KY.
It is possible that she went to Oklahoma with Bill sometime after her
marriage.
This is all the information that I have. Bill is my grandfather's
brother. I've been very successful in locating information on the
spouses of his other siblings, but no luck on Lizzie.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joan Garvey
