Hi Pat; I saw you posting on roots web about Elias Denman Owens. I am
researching the Elias Owens who md Elizabeth Hall in Scott Co.,Va. I have
their marriage date and etc. but not much beyond that, except I have a lot of
data on their son Squire. I am sure these all tie together somewhere. If you
would share your information with me I would appreciate it; and will be glad
to share the research I have on their son Squire and his descendants. >>
I am coming at this from the Carr surname side of things. Unknown Carr
was Elias Owens' second wife's first husband. Got that? :)
I collect genealogy info on the Carr surname. This isn't my particular
line. Below are some posts I have related to this line for your reference.
I'll cc that person as well.
I would be interested in further information about the Carrs involved in
this.
Sincerely yours,

Thanks for the note. An interesting netiquette discussion. And be assured
I won't copy and paste your writings into my database if you don't wish me to
do so. But let me offer my views and see if I can change your mind. If not,
I'll understand. [I'm more interested in the dates and places of birth and
death than a detailed study of his writings anyway, but I welcome the
opportunity to discuss this important issue.]
Ever the historian, I like to preserve information for future
generations. The Web is like a library where everyone in town owns a few of
the books. One day you go to the library, and the book you want is gone.
I want to assure access to this specific information for Carr
researchers, say, one hundred years from now. But there are no guarantees
unless I copy your text for the following reasons:
1) Your writings are currently at your AOL web site, but unless you have
your site in your will, or you've made other arrangements, the site likely
will not exist in perpetuity.
2) I can't add your link to my site. Even if Rootsweb allowed these
links, they would be quickly outdated and too voluminous to manage myself.
3) Your writings are not excerpted in total or in part from a published,
printed, and/or copyrighted text, best that I can tell. If I am mistaken, let
me know. I can always make a bibliographic reference to the book, you as
author, the publication date, pages, etc, and offer a summary of its contents
in my database.
4) I want to reference a status piece of information. I will site the
source (name and web site URL) and date. As you even pointed out, your online
writings are being modified regularly. I have no guarantee that you won't
tire of Mr Carr's works and remove that section from your writings. For that
matter, there's no way to know you won't start favoring Zen over mystery
writers and put up a yoga text in its place! :)
I understand your concern about duplicate sites, and I have similar
concerns when it comes to my genealogy database. But I contend that my site
won't be indexed by popular search engines like Yahoo and Altavista because
it is a database and not a page. If anything, my database will bring people
to your site, not detract from it in any way.

<< Dear Pat Noble,
John Dickson Carr (1906 - 1977) has a whole excellent print biography by
Douglas G. Greene, as mentioned in the article.
Please do not be offended. But it is not considered a good computer approach
on the web to copy articles. It leads to technical problems.
Instead, why don't you just add a link to my Carr page. I give you
permission to do so.
Then, if I have any additions or corrections to the article, there will be
only one copy on the web. When I expand it, your link will point to the
expanded article. This is how it is usually done on the web.
Thank You,
Mike Grost
