Why birth had to be before 25 Dec 1706.........
# one since Thomas Carr is listed as eldest son and I have a birth date for
his brother John Carr as 25 Dec 1706 [which may not be correct] from the So
Called Bible that regester births for John of Bear Castle. He must have
been born before 25 Dec 1706.
I have seen a date of Est 1705 given him.
The so-called "Carr bible" is in fact a "Register of Births &c." of the
family of John Carr of Bear Castle, oldest son of Major Thomas Carr
and >Mary Dabney, written in his own hand on the flyleaf of one of
six >volumes of "Doddridge's Family Expositor" published in London in 1756.
These books remained in the family, coming into the possession of the
writer of this article, and thus have a very high level of believabiliy and
authenticity for the events cited. I quote from the article as follows:
"John Carr, son of Thomas and Mary Carr, born 25th December, 1706. "Thomas
Carr. son of John and Mary Carr, born 25th November, 1735. "Mary Carr, wife
to John Carr, departed this life 10th March, 1736-7. "Barbara Overton,
daughter to James and Elizabeth Overton, born 20th
April, 1720. "John Carr married Barbara Overton, 27th December 1737. "My
father (John Carr's father) Thomas Carr, departed this life 29th May, 1738,
aged 59 years. "John Carr, son to John and Barbara Carr, born 1738, died
3rd November, 1747. "My mother-in-law, Elizabeth Overton, departed this
life 19th November, 1739. "James Carr, son to John and Barbara Carr, born
20th August, 1740, and died 6th September, following.
"James Carr, son of John and Barbara Carr, born 15th November. 1741,
departed this life 10th of October, 1747. "Dabney Carr, son of John and
Barbara Carr, born 26th October, 1743. "Samuel Carr, son of John and
Barbara Carr, born 6th of January, 1745-6.
"Thomas Overton departed this life 29th September, 1745. "Elizabeth Carr,
daughter to John and Barbara Carr, born 28th December, 1747. "My mother,
Mary Carr, departed this life 7th of September, 1748, aged 60. "Captain
James Overton departed this life 18th June, 1749. "John Carr, son of John
and Barbara Carr, born 11th August, 1750, departed this life 5th April, 1753.
"Garland Carr, son of John and Barbara Carr, born 15th of July, 1754. "Mary
Carr, daughter to John and Barbara Carr, born 25th September, 1758,
departed this life 12th of May, following.
The following is continued in a different handwriting: "John Carr, son of
Thomas and Mary Carr, departed this life 17th day of
June, 1778, aged 72 years. "Dabney Carr, son of John and Barbara Carr, died
16th of May, 1773, aged 30 years. "Samuel Carr, son of John and Barbara
Carr, departed this life 16th day
of May, 1777, aged 32 years. "Barbara Carr, wife to John Carr, departed
this life December, 1794, in the 74th year of her age."
The following statement that John Carr's first wife was Mary Dabney is in
error. John Carr's first wife was Mary Garland, his mother was Mary Dabney,
wife of "Major" Thomas2 Carr, who was son of the immigrant Thomas1 Carr.
The published Minor geneology gives the wife of Thomas1 Carr also as a Mary
Garland, but I have found no direct evidence of this. Thomas1 Carr appears
to have immigrated with two brothers, John1 Carr
>and William1 Carr sometime before 1769 when he appears in the Vestry Book
of St. Peter's Parish as one of the inhabitants of the Pamunky Neck,
originally New Kent Co., Later King William Co. . A William Carr and a John
Carr are also named as parishioners. These three names appear in several
combinations among the few surviving court records of King William.

I'm trying to fix my records of the Virginia Carrs, comparing the
various records and emails sent to me over the past few years. Thanks to
those who have encouraged me to do so.
Carr Family Records, by Edson Carr, pg 73, and "The Carr Family" (text
below), both make reference to Thomas Carr b abt 1709, son of Thomas and Mary
(Dabney) Carr, and the younger Thomas's sons Thomas 15 May 1742, William abt
1745, McCager abt 1748 and Gideon 1752.
Thomas, son of Thomas and Mary (Dabney) Carr, in fact, died in 1743
unmarried and presumably childless.
As I understand it, the children mentioned in the bold text below are
actually the children of Gideon W Carr 1 Jan 1712/13. McCager is Micajah W
Carr.

Thomas Carr, born ca 1651, is the first of the Carr family
we have any knowledge of in America. He settled in Virginia
and received many grants of land, among them one for 546
acres in St. John's Parish and another in King & Queen
county, 24 Apr 1701. He was the sheriff of King William
Co. in 1708 & 1709. He was alive in 1724; we have no
records of the date of his death. He had a son named Thomas

Thomas was Father's and Grandfather's name. Your Grandpa
Carr and Grandma Carr came from Wilson County, Tennessee in
1817. Your Grandpa Carr was born in Albermarle County,
Virgina. Your Grandma was born on the Ocean but was raised
in Tennessee. Your Gradpa Carr with several other men
built a keel boat and brought their families down the Ohio
into Mississippi, from Mississippi to Red River, up the
Red River to Lo Pararie where they landed, sold their
boat, scattered over Arkansas, which was then a
wilderness. They could get all the land they wanted by
simply filing for it. Most of the company got rich in the
course of time.
Elizabeth Dice Carr, daughter of Thomas Carr and Mary

history of the Stuart family is also included in this issue.

in Tennessee.
Harpole, married George Washington Stuart. A partial
history of the Stuart family is also included in this issue.

Dear list:
Has anyone ever developed the possibility of the Link between the CARRs of RI
and the CARRS of VA and or SC?
I know there were CARRS in VA before 1670. The names of a John CARR and a
William CARR were in the Tidewater Area before that time. But there is
little evidence of who they were and where they came from.
The RI CARRS were there prior to that but was there any link to these Early
Colonial CARR families?

Evening folks,
I've been quiet of late as I've been designing a web site
for a client (English and German) about biotech. He didn't
know what had hit him when I suggested a page for gen stuff
:-)
I've just added pages about how DNA can help in genealogy.
Have a look at www.biotechsworld.com
.. might be just the thing you're looking for to prove a
link !!

David,
My information on the subject comes from Raelene Treis, of Alice Springs,
Australia. The inquiry is about three years old, so her email address might
have changed. I'll send her a copy of this email and see if we get a
response. I would be interested in additional details from you to add to my
database. I collect Carr data, to be sure, so I'm not interested in delving
too deeply into the Wallace line, but since the Carr information is so weak,
it would be good to have some firm details on this record. Thanks for
writing. Pat

The major thing I am trying to find out is:
Ann (some say middle name Winston, has anyone seen proof of this for her
middle name?) (CARR) m. George WALLER. Her tombstone says Father William
CARR (which we can prove) and mother was Elizabeth WINSTON (which is what I
would like to prove (yes or no). This tombstone could be the original or a
copy of the original or one with its inscription being made up by the
Senator, does anyone know? Has anyone seen any research by the Senator????
This is the data I have on the tombstone at this time. Any input would be
gladly accepted.
Tombstone "Father William Carr - Mother Elizabeth Winston".
The Honorable Sam Rayburn at the dedication of the marker over the graves
of his great-great Grandfather Col George Waller and his wife Ann Winston
Carr in Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville, VA May 6, 1951. Mr. Rayburn who
probably holds the record for longest tenure as Speaker of the House, U. S.
Congress, traces the Wallers back to Alured de Waller of Newark,
Nottiangham who died in 1183. He mentions that Ann Winston Carr was the
daughter of Captain William Carr and Elizabeth Winston.
If Elizabeth Winston (who is she daughter of?) is the mother of Ann (CARR)
m. George WALLER then she would probably be mother of the siblings William
m. Alsey, Susannah m. Crenshaw, Sarah m. Hord, Mary m. Crenshaw, Ann m.
Walller and Elizabeth m. Unknown. And Susannah (maybe Brooks) would be the
mother of the rest of the children being, Charles Brooks m. maybe none,
Agnes Brooks m. Ellis, Walter Chiles m. Elizabeth Chiles, Phebe m. Walter
Chiles, Thomas m. Francis Bacon & Frances George.
The father of this Ann (maybe Winston) (CARR) WALLER is William d. 1760. It
is proven he was the son of ?(Maybe William) CARR & ? CHILES.
For proof Court Case for his Estate.
His wife Susannah m. 2nd Ludwick O'Neal and had a daughter Catherine m.
Rodgers by him.
Will supply refrences if requested. Thank you for any input.

I have a few pieces of her correspondence, all with the same address,
unfortunately, from last year. I found her name in one of the emails as Janet
Karr Wallace. I'll send this to the Carr list and maybe she is still a member
of the list or someone will know her current address.

The books by Edson Carr (1894) and Arthur Carr (1947) get creative and
make some errors on this line. Arthur Carr's book shows this as the 129 line.

I am searching for any information on my greatgrandfather,Rufus D. Carr,
born January 23, 1845 in TN and died May 30, 1931 in Cleburne, Johnson Co.,
TX. He married my greatgrandmother, Alice S. Mitchell Isley, widow of
Martin V. Isley of North Carolina, in White Mound, Grayson County, TX,
between 1887-1890. They had the following children around the Sherman area:
Arvilla Carr, Clifford Burnley Carr (my grandfather), Lillian Carr, and
Benton Carr. At some point, they divorced because my greatgrandmother
remarried in 1905. Benton must have died because he is not listed on the
1910 census for Hill County, TX with the rest of the
family. The family stories state that Rufus was not the most pleasant man
to be around, and, most likely, spent his last years alone. He once had his
picture on the front page of The New York Herald as having the longest beard
in the world. I do have several pictures of Grandpa Carr and his beard was
longer than he was tall. It is told that he died from injuries he received
when pushed down the courthouse steps in Johnson Co., TX.
I recently discovered where he was buried in Cleburne, and will be visiting
his grave to take pictures. I am searching for any information on who his
parents were, any siblings, any information about his life, if he had any
other marriages and children, a copy of his obituary, etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Story about Marie Carr, who lives in Portland, ME and runs a refugee
settlement there. Her father and legal guardian is James Rooney, 35 yrs old.
She has occasional bouts of depression and has to be hospitalized, so she has
a legal guardian and therefore isn't allowed to vote in Maine.
Voters To Decide Who Casts Ballots
By JOHN McELHENNY
.c The Associated Press
BOSTON (AP) - Barbara Jaehn and Marie Carr share a passion for voting, but
their right to cast a ballot remains uncertain as Tuesday's elections
approach.
Jaehn is a former prison inmate in Massachusetts, where a statewide ballot
measure would restrict jailed felons' voting rights. Alternatively, Carr,
whose bouts of stress and depression periodically put her in the hospital,
could receive the right to vote under a ballot initiative in Maine.
``It's a guaranteed, constitutional right,'' said Jaehn, 45, who spent three
years in state prison for cocaine trafficking.
In Maine, ``it's only that tiny class, the mentally ill, who can't vote,''
said James Rooney, the 35-year-old Carr's father and legal guardian.
Massachusetts has about 9,800 felons in state prisons and several thousand in
county jails. It's one of three states, with Maine and Vermont, that allows
jailed felons to vote.
Growing up in Framingham, Jaehn said, she voted in every election, from
public library trustees to presidents. While imprisoned in Framingham, from
1995 to 1998, she used absentee ballots.
A key supporter of the measure is state Rep. Francis Marini. Elected in 1994,
his first act was to seek repeal of inmates' constitutional voting rights.
``The right to vote is the fundamental building block of our society,'' said
Marini, a Republican. ``To participate, you need to obey basic laws in our
society.''
The measure would bar jailed felons from voting for congressional seats and
statewide offices. They could still vote in national, county and local races.
A poll this week by the University of Massachusetts found that 49 percent of
likely voters favor the ban, with 31 percent opposed.
Maine's proposal would give the right to vote to mentally ill people who have
court-appointed guardians. Maine is the only state that doesn't allow such
people to vote, measure sponsors say.
Maine already allows mentally ill people without guardians to vote, as well
as people under guardianship for other reasons such as mental retardation,
brain injury and Alzheimer's disease.
It's unknown how many of Maine's mentally ill adults have court-appointed
guardians; best estimates put the figure in the hundreds.
Carr and her family are leaders in the effort to change the law. Rooney said
denying his daughter the right is ``ridiculous.''
He said Carr lives on her own in Portland, runs a store at a refugee
settlement and is fully capable of following politics and choosing
candidates. She recently became ill again and was declining interviews, he
said.
State Rep. Tom Winsor believes people like Carr should not be in the voting
booth.
``If they're so disabled that they're not cognitively able to manage their
own affairs, I don't feel bad that they should have to wait until they're
better to vote,'' said Winsor, a Republican.
A poll last month found Maine residents divided, with 44 percent opposed to
the measure and 42 percent in favor of it.
