I just looked up all the names you listed in "Undaunted Courage" to see if there was
any information regarding Carr in this book. All the names given were listed with the
exception of Carr and Whitestone River. Sorry, I was hoping myself to find the name.

My line of Carr is suppose to be from NC. The only name I have is Clara
Belle Carr born 1858 or 59. Believe she was born in Ohio, not sure.
Possible maternal name somewhere down the line was Duvall. I can find
no trace of her family. Siblings or parents did not exist.
Jenny, Do you want to be NC lost cousins? Joke!!
Clara married John Niles Ludlow of Cincinnati, then went to Indiana, KC,
MO and eventually ended up in Colorado where they died. Help!! Thanks,
Alice

I am about to leave for a week's vacation, but will give a brief resume
from memory, and can send additional information and references later if you
wish.
John Karr married Dorothy Hale in Middletown, CT in 1744. She was local
and her family is in the Jacobus book "Hale, House, etc" He must have been
about 35, judging from his age at death, and was likely previously married,
but I have no record. (Would love to have any possibilities that you may
have). John and Dorothy had 10 children between 1744 and 1761, mostly
christened in the Portland Cong Church, across the river from present day
Middletown. Among their children were Benjamin, David, and Jonathan, all of
whom enlisted in the Revolution from Ashfield, MA. A daughter, Esther,
married Deliverance Warner, also a Revolutionary war soldier.
After the war, David married Mercy Frary in Ashfield in 1780, and soon
thereafter moved to Saratoga Co, NY. It is my guess that he got acquainted
with that area during his military service. His brother Jonathan married
Catherine Brewer in Schagticoke, Rensselaer County, NY also in 1780.
Jonathan's line seems to have adopted the spelling CARR and stayed in NY for a
generation, at least.
David moved to Fort Stanwix (Rome area) NY for a year or two, where two
daughters died. He then moved into Ontario where he was granted land as a
settler in Hamilton Twp. Northumberland County. In about 1808-10 he moved
back to NY, this time into Niagara County, where he died in 1812 in an
epidemic, which also killed a lot of his family. Later in 1812 his home was
burned by the British in the War of 1812.
My line is descended from Moses Frary Karr, who remained in Ontario
until his death in Reach Twp. (near Whitby) in 1848. A number of his sons
and daughters moved into the thumb area of Michigan after the Civil War, and
many descendants still live there.
That is a long-winded summary of the earlier part of the history of my
Karr line as I have it. As I say, I will be happy to send anything more
which may interest you, and I would VERY much appreciate any leads you can
offer about the antecedents of John Karr. Just send me an E mail, and I'll
answer after I return.
Cordially--Norman

P.S. I should have mentioned that family tradition says that our line were
Scotch-Irish, or Ulstermen. That tradition is supported by evidence that some
at least, were members of the Loyal Order of Orange in Reach Township,
Ontario.
I should also have mentioned that I have seen something you published
about the Karrs and Nobles. Congratulations on getting some of your
information into print. I need to do the same. Norman
Karr Kin Searching:
I have been researching my KARR line for a number of years. The earliest entry
I have found is one JOHN KARR who married DOROTHY HALE in Middletown, CT in
1744. Several of his sons were in the Revolution (US side) enlisting from
Ashfield, MA. John was apparently about 35 years of age in 1744. Does this tie
into anyones line in ant way?
I would appreciate any hints that anyone can give.

Sometimes the local LDS Church will have a pilgrimage to Salt Lake City.
You might see if they will let you tag along. They would be going for
religious reasons, but part of that is to do the genealogy there and then
do the Temple work for them. Sometimes they have a couple of pilgrimages
a year.

It is just about like using the Family History Center. There are
computers to work on the Ancestral File. There are computers to go
through the catalogs. There are film readers for the microfilms. There
are large tables to spread books on. A majority of the time you can get
excellent help from the librarians there.
The Library is several floors and you find Europe on a floor and the US
on another floor. There are others, but I can't remember all of the
break down. The librarians are there fulfilling a calling of the church,
some of them are happy to help, some should have stayed at home. The
folks who are in the foreign countries, Usually can help with
translations.
>(2) Gen. info. to take with you
Take the line on which you intend to work, but also take an outline of
the rest of the family. I found that even there you can hit a problem
that they can't even help with.
(3) where to stay
There are name hotels all over town. The farther you are from Temple
Square (where the library and the Temple are co-located) the cheaper your
room. The better named hotels probably will have a shuttle to the
library and back. There are a number of hotels that are right down the
block or across the street. I don't have a name though.
>(4) transportation once there?
There is an extensive bus system. Again, there may be a shuttle from
your hotel.
>Any other comments?
1. Give yourself pleanty of time. It is initially overwhelming.
2. Make a list of what you definitely want to accomplish. You can get
side tracked easily.
3. Don't judge all the librarians if you get a sour apple initially.
Again, they are far from home and some of them should have stayed there.
One of the local librarians I knew went for her mission, then on a
pilgrimage was appalled at the way she was treated by one of the
librarians in SLC.
4. They will appreciate it if you take them a disc with your information.
It will be added to the Ancestral File, and/or will correct the
Ancestral File. If you can make it PAF ready or use the Temple Ready it
will be better assimilated. I feel, even as a non-member, that it is a
great place to safeguard your info. It is also correctable, as I am
going to have to do. It becomes available to many as opposed to World
Family Tree that you have to buy. I found many helpful folks and cousins
through the Ancestral File before computers and e-mail.

be related to me, but I thought someone else on the lists might be
interested in this line:

Karen,
I've been four times on my own, never with a tour. I'm a member of NEHGS and
every thing that they do seems to be first class, so that should be good.
For me, I'm too jealous of my limited time in SLC to participate in any events
between 7 AM and 10 PM, so a tour probably isn't for me.
For first timers, all that is necessary, is to go the room (first floor, left
side, near entrance) where someone will give you a brief 30-45 min discussion on
the library. It was very helpful on my first time.
I have three rules for SLC for me and all truly addicted genealogists , which I
share here:
1. Stay at the Plaza Hotel (Best Western). Right behind Library, walk 1/2 block
to get there. No need for car, hotel picks you up at the airport and drops you
back off.
2. I give up eating during the day so I don't lose research time. I eat
breakfast at the restaurant at the hotel, before 7 AM, and order room service
after the Library throws me out at 10 PM. This is why my husband no longer goes
with me, as he wants to sightsee, eat, take naps and other "normal" things.
3. Go early (6:50 am) stand in a very short line and walk to the back right side
of the first floor where there are individual desks. It is about 300% quieter
than the front large library tables.
All census' are on the second floor, all general research books, location info,
vital records are on the first floor, and they've moved the family historys to
the building across the square from the library.
Have a ball!

Pat,
The following data (see bottom) which you posted Monday is incorrect. Here
is the correct information (I was one of the people who contributed this
data originally.) Unfortunately, this is ALL the info. I have on this
family at this time. Anyone out there have any "Lewis Carrs" in their line
in Vermont in the mid-1800s???
CORRECTIONS:
Lewis P. Carr (b. 1820-1830 in Underhill, Chittenden Co., VT) was the first
husband of Nancy Marie Hicks (b. 1839 in Westford, Franklin Co., VT). They
are the parents of Alden B. Carr (b. 1859 VT) and Alice Carr (b. 1861 VT).
Lewis ran a general store in Derby, VT in 1860.
Nancy Hicks Carr later became the third wife of Henry R. Curry.
The 1870 Federal Census for Underhill, VT shows these two children listed
with "Henry & Nancy Currier" and indicates "neither parent foreign born."
Henry Curry was born in Canada. Most of Henry Curry's other children from
both his prior wives and from Nancy are listed as well.
Mary Ann Wheeler was the first wife Henry R. Curry. She was never married
to Lewis P. Carr.
Hope this clears things up.
